Well, I am not a Beijinger, however, I am a foreigner living in China, now for over 8 years, so I will give you my 2 cents worth, pointwise, below.

-- there is no Covid pandemic.

-- there has never been a Covid pandemic.

-- wearing a mask has no efficacy in preventing the transmission of viral respiratory illness.

-- PCR tests (aka nucleic acid tests, aka 核酸测试)do not indicate anything about the health of the person so tested. Furthermore they are so manipulable as to be able to produce any result desired.

-- social distancing, and lockdowns have no efficacy in preventing the the transmission of viral respiratory illness.

-- vaccines intended to inhibit the effects or transmission of a coronavirus have no proven efficacy, safety, or necessity.

-- the entire monstrosity of the `pandemic' response and affiliated measures has absolutely nothing to do with the health and physical well-being of the populace.

There ya go. Put that in yer pipe and smoke it.

Vincent, your points are absolutely valid and it was wrong to attack Irene for sharing her experiences. And to be honest, my first reaction was also anger, but then when I re-read the piece, it was actually quite on point. The essence was in the headline - COVID RULES DON'T SINGLE OUT FOREIGNERS. This is absolutely true. The Covid rules apply equally to everyone.

However, the timing of the article may have been off. Especially since a lot of expats are frustrated with the Covid rules (I moved to Shanghai from Beijing in December, and have been going through the lockdown since April). This frustration, in my opinion, is also misplaced, since the same "frustrated" expats were not complaining in 2020 and 2021 when the rest of the world was going through lockdowns, while we were all traipsing around like nothing was wrong. But that's a different conversation.

I believe that the timing and message of Irene's article was off because it was a slap in the face of the discrimination and xenophobia foreigners face FROM PEOPLE, not from the Covid rules. The slew of angry comments came from that spot. Perhaps a way to address that emotion might be to do a piece on that.

And of course, we all owe an apology to Irene for belittling her experiences, which were about COVID RULES, and not outright discrimination from the people.

Have to resend this after my previous comment was deleted. If someone shies away from you, thats racism (no matter if you think its on the low end). Microaggressions make people feel unhappy and discriminated against (as we see from the comments) - and your response is to "jab" at them (even if personally you believe they're overhyping it)? Its not really living up to the title of "not divisive" or being empathetic.

The microaggressions don't really bother me (the personal experience of being punched, kicked, told to 'go home', seeing a friend stabbed, for being a foreigner does), but I wouldn't "jab" at my readers who are bothered

People shy away from you because you're a foreigner - that's not racism? - cos it is (even if you believe if its on the minor end of the spectrum). And your response to people complaining about racism - I'm going to jab at them? Keep digging Vincent...

I don't think there's any huge problem with covid policies, but the xenophobia and descrimination are off the charts. For example, the kids in my community run away and cry to their grandparents "waiguoren". Actually scared. What are these parents and schools and media teaching these kids. And actually what are they teaching the general population? Also, some of the people in my building refuse to enter the building while I'm waiting at the elevator. They wait until I go up. When I walk to work people go way around me. Like they are walking on the sidewalk and they see me coming, so they walk way into the road to get around me. And I've been living in that community for 5 years. Probably longer than most of those people have been in Beijing. I have been to the convenient store across the street from where I live literally thousands of times, and they still talk about me as if I can't understand them. blablabla..waijiao. I don't even want to go out in public anymore. Now I'm just making an escape plan to get out of this nightmare. And most people I know are planning the same.

Now let me give you the real dope, From someone who knows. For someone coming off a weeks long engagement with Ms. Baijiu and Ms. Ergoutou there is a concoction that I have devised that is scientifically known to work. Whatcha need is magnesium, ashwaghandha, (look it up) , B complex vitamin, melatonin, large dose of Vitamin C. Throw all these compounds into a blender. Blend until they have produced a powdery consistency. Pour boiling water and make a tea of it. Add a couple cloves of minced garlic. Presto. Eat a substantial, healthy meal, my favorite is a real Greek salad. Do all this about an hour before you intend to sleep. All these items are readily available on Taobao

Actually, there's no need to get upset. The statement you summarized says nothing more than, if one wishes for entrepreneural success, then he ought to become an entrepreneur, with all that entails. In a word, it's a tautology. Like the Spanish proverb gors, "Take whatever you like. But remember, it all must be paid for."

And the customer is always right. However, ifn ya ain't gonna pay what we says you ta pay, ya ain't no customer.

So...what? Do the ladies (trannie swimmers, whatever) really go for a man who can stand eggs on end? Or does our man Ryan think he'll impress his grandkids. "What did you do in the Great Pandemic, grampa?" "Waaaal, I stood eggs on end, night 'n day! Yessir, that took gumption! These was real eggs too, from a chicken.
