First Glance: Zhu & Mao Shop

Zhu & Mao Shop's narrow hallway is jam-packed with a mélange of dainty "handmade" items – quilts with patterned prints sewn together to form sling-on bags and small purses, washi tape, notebooks, and porcelain cups with eyes and mouths. Some are obviously idiosyncratic designs, though Vera Bradley copies can be spotted here and there.

It's questionable as to which products on sale are actually handmade, but no doubt the store, which has a wall-to-ceiling window facing out onto the ever-busy Beiluogu Xiang, has the cute factor going for it. The owner, nonetheless, has a passion for sewing and arranges monthly quilting classes in Wangjing for her customers and friends. Taught by professional instructors, she hopes to spread her love of engaging in arts and crafts to others.

No doubt, the shop displays the same hutong charm that resonates in Grandma's Kitchen, and the idyll location brings about tranquility not found in urban malls. Yet, many may hesitate when they see the high price. A handmade rabbit doll with quilted prints was priced at RMB 200 while small sunflower patches that can be sewn to a fabric bag were RMB 25 each.
