Barbecues and Teen Spirit: American Eagle Debuts in Beijing

American Eagle Outfitters has a reputation for casual American fashion, a formula it hasn’t altered one bit for its Beijing debut. The two-floor store is massive but simple, with floor-length posters of healthy young people grinning at you from the walls.

The shelves are stuffed with printed shorts (from RMB 369), tank tops and T-shirts (from RMB 99) and more jumpers than you could ever imagine (from RMB 245). Boys now have ready access to short-sleeved checked shirts (from RMB 399) and colorful board shorts (from RMB 399). Sure, the clothes are rather preppy and may look foolish on anyone over 25, but they made me think of wide green fields, barbecues and teen spirit – and frankly, I’d have been disappointed if they hadn’t.
