Xiao Susu’s New Sanyuanqiao Location: Go for the Terrace, Stay for the Tacos
The Covid-19 pandemic hasn’t been easy on the restaurant industry, but one local brand has been thriving in the face of adversity, opening four new branches across. There’s no doubt about it, Susu is on a winning streak, opening restaurants in Xidan, Jingshan Park, and Liangmaqiao, and now, Phoenixtown’s InStreet in Sanyuanqiao.
Decked out in the brand’s signature bright blue, the new Xiao Susu at InStreet has a casual izakaya/bistro vibe, with an expansive outdoor terrace that should be perfect for the cooler weather we’ll (hopefully) be getting soon.
The menu boasts a lot of the dishes that have made Susu a favorite — fresh and fried spring rolls, pho, Vietnamese chicken curry — as well as new dishes such as the super-spiced roast pomfret with lemongrass, galangal, and chilies. However, the big selling point is the new Viet Tacos. Inspired by Susu’s recent collaboration with Las Musas as part of their taco month, the tacos feature some of Susu’s most popular dishes, such as cha ca la fish, shaking beef, and lemongrass tofu, stuffed inside corn or flour tortillas.
Fusions like this are a tricky line to tread, but Susu pulls it off by sticking to largely Vietnamese ingredients and simply wrapping them in tortillas, rather than mixing in Mexican flavors. Our favorites were, without a doubt, the cha ca la fish tacos, which have a super fragrant hit of fresh dill, scallions, and cilantro.
Pair your dinner with one of a range of biodynamic and natural wines, new to the menu for this location, or a seasonal G&T.
Between Forno, Jing-A, and now, Xiao Susu, InStreet is becoming quite the hotspot. Here’s hoping more of our favorite local restaurants will make it over that way as well.
