First gold for a Beijinger: More Beijingers have been participating in these Olympics than is typical, and now we’ve witnessed the first Beijinger of this year’s games to earn a gold medal. Zhang Jiaqi (age 17, pictured at top) snatched up the medal for synchronized diving alongside her teammate Chen Yuxi. Check out the rest of the Beijinger athletes we're keeping an eye on here.
License plate limitations: Ramping up its efforts to control automobile pollution, Beijing has expanded the area that non-Beijing plates are allowed to enter without a permit. The area now includes all area encompassed by (but not including) the Sixth Ring Road as well as the entire district of Tongzhou. Vehicles can apply for a permit to enter the city up to 12 times per year with permits valid for seven days at a time.
Beijing’s own Snowpiercer: Yesterday, Beijing unveiled and sent its first train down Line 11 of the subway, which is being hailed as “Beijing’s Winter Olympic Line,” as it will be vital for transit in the western part of the city during the events. The line, just 4.2 kilometers in length with 4 lines, probably won’t be hosting your commute, but it is the city’s first subway line to have cars equipped with 5G antennas.
