French Food Market Lafayette Gourmet Opens First Beijing Store

French food supermarket Lafayette Gourmet has just opened its first store in China, with a flagship Beijing store located on the fifth floor of Galeries Lafayette department store in Xidan.

China Retail News claims that: "All ingredients and food sold in this supermarket are directly shipped from Europe and over 80 percent are from France."

We called by this morning to take a quick look. The store decor is stylish, with a selection of mainly dry goods and snacks of sale, as well as some wines, and foie gras products from Rougie

However, don't get too excited about the stock for now although there is a good selection of French brands, including Bonne Maman jams and La Mere Poulard biscuits, many of these are available at other import supermarkets in Beijing. While we weren't exactly expecting a provincial French market, we would have liked to have seen a little more selection. However, the store has only been open for five days, so there may be surprises to come.
