French Food Market Lafayette Gourmet Opens First Beijing Store
French food supermarket Lafayette Gourmet has just opened its first store in China, with a flagship Beijing store located on the fifth floor of Galeries Lafayette department store in Xidan.
China Retail News claims that: "All ingredients and food sold in this supermarket are directly shipped from Europe and over 80 percent are from France."
We called by this morning to take a quick look. The store decor is stylish, with a selection of mainly dry goods and snacks of sale, as well as some wines, and foie gras products from Rougie.
However, don't get too excited about the stock for now – although there is a good selection of French brands, including Bonne Maman jams and La Mere Poulard biscuits, many of these are available at other import supermarkets in Beijing. While we weren't exactly expecting a provincial French market, we would have liked to have seen a little more selection. However, the store has only been open for five days, so there may be surprises to come.
