Ted Talk: Old City, New Soul
TEDxBeijing returned last Saturday to 751 D-Park with the theme "Old City, New Soul". The theme pertains to Beiing's tradition and culture of the past and how the city and the people re-invent themselves for the present and the future. Six speakers gave talks ranging from "Hutongs and Traffic Patterns" to the "Analysis of Taxi Driver Small Talk" and "How to combat the problem of False Medical Advertising."
The event showcased the initiatives undertaken by both foreigners and local Chinese to adapting and adopting changes in their lives and culture.
The main point of TEDx events are for thought leaders to tell stories that inspire, engage and spur action. For TEDxBeijing, the ideas discussed were just the beginning of further exploration and learning by the audience. The next TEDxBeijing will take place in October, with its unstructured sibling organization Barcamp due for an event sometime in August. The main point of TEDx events are for thought leaders to tell stories that inspire, engage and spur action.Indeed. And it's a shame this event had none of those characteristics.
Whether due to poor planning, unsuitable speakers, or simply dull topics, this particular TEDx was unfortunately one of the worst lectures I've ever been too. Very disappointing, for me at least.
Very true unfortunately. Uninspired, slow speeches with very little content or original thought that went on forever. The event itself wasn't all bad but judging from the audience's reaction and that fact that nobody really seemed interested in the after-party the speakers really failed to inspire.
