Art Attack: Chariots of Fire, Be the Next Tarantino

This week, catch the opera Aida at the NCPA or get into the Olympic spirit with a screening of Chariots of Fire. For those looking to get some training in film, acting or visual arts, August is delivering. You can take a course on photography curating at Three Shadows, lean filmmaking from the teacher to the stars or take a workshop on singing and dancing on stage.

Three Shadows Photography Art Centre will begin educational programs about photography and the arts, starting with an eight-week course called “Future Curators.” The course runs August 11 to September 30, every Saturday and Sunday, and you’ll be learning everything from basic photography theory and history of photography to headier things like criticism and photography curation.

For more information or to sign up, visit www.threeshadows.cn. We’ll keep you posted on future courses as well. We don’t need to tell you Beijing’s art scene is ripe for opportunities for budding artists, photographers, gallery managers, etc., and now you can get training through one of the city’s premiere visual arts venues.

On August 18-19, the folks behind the Beijing International Movie Festival are hosting a two-day comprehensive filmmaking class with Dov Simens, who’s taught people like Will Smith, Michael Jackson, Quentin Tarantino and even Batman’s Cristopher Nolan all about how to make movie magic.

Find out more here, or go here to sign up and pay for the course. The “golden ticket” tuition (front row seats during class and a VIP event with Dov Simens) is RMB 3,000, while the standard ticket is RMB 2,400, discounted to RMB 2,000 if you book in early August. Be sure to use the promotional code “BIMC88” to get 10% off.

Beijing Playhouse is also offering a workshop for singers and dancers who’d like to learn how to use those skills on a stage. Email performance@beijingplayhouse.com for more details. The workshop is completely free and is a great chance to get a foot in the door if you’re interested in auditioning for future productions.

If you’d rather just sit back and spectate, see below for the usual list of events around town, including a Verdi opera, a screening of the always-inspiring Chariots of Fire or Latin America’s first animated film, and a talk with a novelist who started off writing soap operas.
