Competition Heats Up at the Beijinger's 2014 Chili Eating Contest With Joint First Place
Last Saturday marked the Canada International School’s Canada Day celebrations and with it came our very own the Beijinger chili eating competition.
Now in its tenth year, we had no issues filling the 12 spots for the competition as turns out peoples’ propensity for pain is far reaching, as proven by the international line-up of Canadians, Americans, Chinese and one contestant each from New Zealand, England, and Mexico.
Due to an unprecedented joint winner outcome, the prize money of RMB 1,200 for first place and RMB 800 for second place was shared between Cody Owens (US) and Byron Logue (UK) who both sweated it out to become ‘Masters of Spice,’ downing 25 chilies each in three minutes. Frank Farooq came in a cool second place with 21 chilies, winning RMB 400.
It may have been that this year’s chilies were particularly capsaicinoid-heavy as winner both in 2012 and 2013, Daniel Mulroy, managed to huff 46 and 51 peppers respectively, though the time limit was previously five minutes.
Following the competition, audience members joined the contestants on the stage to share their pain, eating whatever leftover chilies there were.
Check out the entire event in our gallery here or see how last year’s event compared here.
