What to Wear: New Year’s Eve, Men’s Edition

Guys, don't let the ladies outshine you this Saturday evening. You need to put some effort into your getup. Unlike your female counterparts, however, you’ve got to strike a cool balance between suave and nonchalant. (Girls, click here for your guide.)

While the women are decking themselves out in sequins, you can spruce up your look with a collared shirt, a tie or even a bow tie. We’d argue against the full-on suit – unless, of course, you’re hitting up a black tie or cocktail affair. Whatever party you choose (see our Nightlife Editor’s complete list here), you’ve got to enter the New Year looking fresh, confident and composed. The outfit we have in mind is for a more casual occasion. See below for inspiration.

White Claw Neck Shirt by Barney’s New York, RMB 130 (Daftshopping.com)
What better way to convey clean beginnings than a white shirt? Just don’t get it dirty. Daft Shopping (which we first wrote up in our November 2010 issue) is an e-shop that caters to stylish men living in China, and it’s selling this shirt for 30 percent off.

Hillside x Monocle Chambray Cotton Tie, RMB 850 (The Monocle Shop)
If you’re keeping the rest of your outfit casual, a tie – and a chambray one at that – is a dapper way of kicking things up a notch.

Black Ankle Boots, from RMB 750 (Silk Market, 1/F, Stall 0053)
This Silk Market vendor, which goes by the name 27Hang Handicraft Shoe Studio, stands out with the quality of its real leather footwear. This type of ankle boot has been embraced by men and women alike. For men, it makes a bold style statement. (On MrPorter.com, a similar pair is being sold for USD 650.)

Wool Cardigan, RMB 349 (Gap)
This cozy knit adds not only color and texture to your outfit, but also a touch of boyish insouciance.

Leather Bomber Jacket, RMB 634 (Topman and FEI Space – while supplies last)
Tough, edgy and fitted. You’ll come across as ready to party, but more importantly, ready to handle whatever comes your way (that night, and the rest of the year).

Slim Fit Black Jeans by Ralph Lauren, RMB 1,420 (Mr. Porter)
Black jeans are a step up from regular denim – and these will match up perfectly with your boots.
