Solid and Satisfying: The Bistro Opens at Ritan Park

Between quality sandwiches, lunch sets (RMB 39) and deliveries starting this month, The Bistro should be popular among Ritan-area residents and embassy staff. A canny approach to wine cuts out the markup – with a number of bottles in the RMB 100-150 range, you could easily make a habit of stopping here after work.

Founded on tasty homemade bread, the sandwiches are solid and satisfying, although the homemade corned beef and pastrami need a bit more work.

Owner Samson Kwok is almost trying too hard to compensate for a few items he hasn’t tracked down yet. He freely acknowledges the shortcomings of using sweetened pickle as a substitute for dill pickle; customers would understand if he simply left the pickles out and explained the dilemma.

For a great intro, go straight for the Coney Island sandwich. Though the name serves mainly to confuse, it’s a treat, stuffed with ham and cheese and served with potent mustard. The apple pie (RMB 26) makes for an amicable finish. Or you could stay for a bottle of wine.

Good for: Embassy lunchers, wine

Perfect...The service from samson was very good and he made sure he had enough time for everyone in the restaurant. The wine was a superb selection and very very good price. The food was slightly slow but as a new establishment it is understandable. I had the escargot which was good and the veal which was ok. I can't wait to return and try the sandwhich selection. All in all for the warm welcome of Samson and menu selection (which was perfect and not overwhelming or too over the top) I will be returning many more times to come!!!
