Nine Must-See/Must-Do Events at Beijing Design Week
Beijing Design Week (BJDW), is coming up very soon (Sep 23-Oct 7), and events are plenty, but which ones will you choose? Here are some of our picks to keep you busy for the entire almost-two-weeks.
Sep 23: BJDW Opening Party Market
Dashilar's Tiantao Market, recently shut down, is opening up to the BJDW crowd and starting off Design Week with various booths including wine with Cheers and TRB, beer with Great Leap Brewing and Panda Brew Pub, and bites from various Beijing vendors. Migas' resident DJ Nassdak will even be making an appearance to keep you going all afternoon.
Sep 24-Oct 7: DRINK'N HOPe
DRINK'N HOPe is a city-wide event aiming at helping you explore some of the best bars in the area. Participants can buy a special necklace and drink holder for RMB 100, allowing the 'hopper' to get a unique creation at RMB 20 at each participating bar.
Proceeds from this event will go towards fundraising for elderly health care. The clinic will be set up at Baitasi, inviting TCM doctors to come and give free consultations to the local community.
Sep 24-Oct 7: Lu Xun Museum
As a former publishing house, this Baitasi-based museum houses an overview exhibition and a series of commissioned projects to share information about the area, as it is part of BJDW for the first time. The Lu Xun Museum is thus a good starting point to explore Baitasi further.
Sep 24-Oct 7: Data Alley
Lava Beijing presents Data Alley in Baitasi, an exhibition of original infographics composed from weeks of data collection in this new BJDW area. The infographics give an insight into the community and the people living in this neighborhood, from demographics to architecture, and restaurants to transportation.
Sep 24-27, Sep 24-Oct 7: Slo-Mo Market
During BJDW, the Slo-Mo Market aims to promote the 'Slow Life' concept over the consumers' lifestyle with a craft and a food fair. The craft fair will be held between September 24-27, with a mix of local and international designers' artworks at North Fuchengmen Inner Street in Xicheng District. As for the food fair, this will be held throughout the entire duration of BJDW at 2/F, 313 North Fuchengmen Inner Street, Xicheng District.
Sep 24-Oct 7: 3D Printing at Parkview Green
Parkview Green is one of the new core areas of BJDW, and are proud to be presenting a series of installations, on-site creation enactments, events, and exhibitions focusing on engaging the public on specific processes of making, deconstructing, and remaking. Central to all this is an onsite 3D printing station (where you can watch things being printed).
Sep 24-Oct 7: Guest City: Dubai
This year's guest city is Dubai, presented in partnership with Dubai Design Week, and aims to explore local solutions to global challenges, all the while facilitating communication between the two cities and connections between artists. Check out how things are looking on Dubai's creative front at 8 Dawailangying Hutong.
Sep 24-Oct 7: INDIGO Mall
INDIGO Mall will be curating major installations by Chinese and international design stars as well as exhibitions of new work by local designers and students. This work aims to present an alternative view of how we would normally consume, and what we expect from, design.
Oct 1-2: Farm 2 Neighbors Farmers Market in 751
Between 11am and 5pm, 751D Park Bridge will host the Farm 2 Neighbors Farmers Market. Entry is RMB 30, including a RMB 15 cash coupon. Expect loads of local foods and crafts, upholding the theme of 'think local share local.' Produce comes from both small farms and stores from around Beijing, and neighboring provinces for good variety.
