Summer Drought and Shortages
Living in Beijing, most people are used to certain cuts - service, internet, Google - and with the summer here we can add power cuts and water shortages to the list.
Beijing’s drought isn’t actual news since it’s now in its twelfth year, but People’s Daily has reported that “city's per capita water resources has declined to 100 cubic meters” which falls well below the international marker - 1000 cubic meters – of determining water shortage.
The drought may be year round but only in the summer does it cause power cuts. The lack of water resulting in a lack of hydropower which, along with rising coal costs, means this summer’s power cuts are predicted to be more severe than normal.
