These Are the Three Best New Burgers in Beijing

The 2024 Juicy Burger Cup not only saw a relative newbie by the name of DOSH take second place in our Top 16 list, but it also saw a slew of new burger restaurants in the race. As a tie-in with the main contest, we had our panel of experts rank a list of eight of these novices from 1st to 8th, in order to decide the top newcomer and runner ups. They are as follows…

Overtone Taproom

This brewery arrived in Beixinqiao from Scotland in early 2024, bringing with them a nice menu of brews and bar grub, which includes, of course, burgers. Burgers so good, in fact, that they were named Best New Burger for this year’s Juicy Burger Cup! They’re not afraid to think outside the box on this front, having proven this with one of their offerings at Juicy Burger Fest this year: the Overtone 240 All Beef Burger (RMB 88, comes with fries). This behemoth of a burger packs two 80 gram beef patties with tender beef brisket that’s been cured and smoked for two days. The meat mountain is then slathered with barbecue sauce and finished with shredded pickled onions, shredded lettuce and tomatoes.

BA Burger

The first of our runners up in the best new burger category is BA Burger, which calls the neighborhood of Liudaokou home. The patties to be found at BA are thick, and the burger menu is kept to the classics: single (RMB 36) and double (RMB 56) Angus Beef Burgers plus a Wagyu Beef option (RMB 48). Of course, that doesn’t mean classics are the only thing on offer. They’ve also got intriguing takes like their Thai Flavor Pineapple Burger (RMB 42) and a Fried Cod Burger (RMB 29).

WhyNot Taproom

Our second runner up and second new hutong beer bar of this dynamic trifecta, WhyNot serves its brews and bites from a venue bathed in red light along Zhaofu Jie, not too far from Baochao Hutong. While they’ve got a mean classic burger in the form of the Angus Half Pound Beef Burger (RMB 78) – which as you might have guessed, features one half pound thick patty made of glorious Angus beef – the star of the show is their very Beijing-inspired Zhaofu Jie Erba Jiang Fried Chicken Burger (RMB 68). For those not in the know, 二八酱 èrbā jiàng – literally “two eight sauce” – is a favorite hot pot dipping sauce consisting of two parts peanut sauce to eight parts sesame, hence the name.
