Thirsty? Wet your whistle with Booze News, our wrap-up of the week's best bar deals, parties, drink concoctions, industry gossip, and more.
Agave tasting at Pebbles
Don't know your tequila from your mezcal? All shall become clear (then a little hazy, then potentially a topless dance party) this Thursday, 7pm, at Pebbles' second agave spirits tasting. For RMB 458, you'll get 12 tastings in total, six hailing from Mexico's Jalisco region and six from Oaxaca. To keep things civil, there'll also be food pairings from each state. The top shelf offerings include the five-year aged Herencia Histórico Cristalino tequila paired with a Ningxia lamb birria and Mezcal Viejo Indecente with tlayuda. RSVP is a must – find out how to here.
BritCham beer release at Beersmith
Necking pints is as British as the Queen, crumpets, and tea, and don't BritCham know it! As part of their monthly Beersmith meetup, this Thursday's event, starting at 6.30pm, will be particularly special as it coincides with the release of the "All Ale the Queen" Earl Grey summer ale, brewed in collaboration between the chamber and the CBD brewery. The event itself costs RMB 80 for BritCham members or RMB 120 for non-members, which includes a pint of the new beer, a dissection courtesy of brewmaster Wilson Hede, and a chance to hobnob with members from the Danish Chamber of Commerce who will also be in attendance. Meanwhile, on Thursday only, the All Ale the Queen will also be buy-one-get-one-free for anyone who swings by.
Alex Molina takeover at La Social
Usually, you'll find Alex Molina keeping busy at his co-owned restaurant and bar Mosto in Nali Patio but this Wednesday, for one night only, he'll make the 30-second walk over to La Social to serve a selection of his favorite cocktails. From 9pm onwards, try Molina's take on several classics, including the gin fizz, El Presidente, dark and stormy, grapefruit margarita, and sea breeze, all for RMB 60. Additionally, get there early to warm up on half-price drinks until 8.30pm. More info here.
Unlimited cocktails at Hey Mate
Shunyiites have a couple of deals to get excited about at whiskey bar and tanning salon (yep) Hey Mate, who as of this Saturday will run a weekly unlimited cocktails deal from 5pm onwards for only RMB 298 (with no time limit!). Then on Wednesdays, they'll offer buy-one-get-one-free on a selection of drinks. As per the Surgeon General's warning, we do not recommend getting into the tanner afterward.
De Refter's terrace returns
After having been forced to close during the pandemic, Belgian bar De Refter can finally allow imbibers back onto their Courtyard 4 terrace. You can now enjoy the sunshine/nighttime between 11.30am-1am (2am on weekends) as well as happy hour deals from 3-7pm, which gets you a selection of beers, wines, and liquor at discounted prices depending on the day. See all the deals here.
Boozy brunch at Slow Boat
Finally, Slow Boat will celebrate the end of their ongoing IPA Week (more on that here) with a boozy brunch this Saturday and Sunday at their newest Maizidian location. For RMB 188, between 11am-5pm, you can add three hours of free-flow spanning all 19 beers currently available at the brewpub while you feast on their regular brunch or burger offerings. Not a bad way to end the week!
