Suikoden Japanese Restaurant Brings Yakitori Glory to Gulou

The recent opening of Suikoden on Gulou Dongdajie is likely a welcome addition for the Dongcheng masses, not only because it saves them a trip to Maizidian or Lucky Street for authentic yakitori, but because it also boasts one of the tastiest takes on those meat sticks in town.

For an effective lowdown of what's on offer, be sure to order one of Suikoden’s yakitori platters (RMB 45), which comes with five chicken and beef skewers. The flank steak variation, a cut that is often preferred for grilling, is rendered here laudably supple, juicy, and irresistibly sweet thanks to a quality yakitori sauce. You can also choose to upgrade for RMB 85, and enjoy five more luxurious ingredients, including a foie gras skewer that again showcases the kitchen's superior preparation.

Other menu items that are worth trying – despite paling in comparison to the yakitori – include the chilled tofu for RMB 20 (topped with bonito fish flakes) and a crispy-fried chicken cutlet for RMB 58.

Suikoden’s ambiance suits the occasion perfectly; soft lighting, intimately snug booths sectioned off by lattice, and boldly bright Japanese paintings that will transport you far east from Gulou's hutongs from the moment you enter. Overall, Suikoden's inviting atmosphere, the quality of their yakitori, and the lack of other such restaurants in the neighborhood, means that it provides a decent change of scenery for the area's hungry hutong dwellers.
