Gallery Watch: Tennis Court, On Methods, Echo, and New Directions
As always, our (currently) sunny city is full of events and goings-on, but art exhibitions are easily overlooked as there are so many opening, it can be hard to miss them. These are our selections for those looking for places to soak up art during the next few weeks. Make sure to get there before the exhibitions close!
Tennis Court
Tennis Court is artist Xu Qu’s first large scale outdoor installation, continuing his interest in studying movement, focusing the momentary state observed in the movement of the object. The exhibition is a 1/6 of a regular sized tennis court, in which, with the help of mechanical power, we can see the unique moments of a tennis ball in his court. Tue-Sun 10.30am-5.30pm until September 11. Taikang Space
It’s Not Right But It’s Okay
Curator and UCCAStore Art Committee member Fang Fang presents It’s Not Right But It’s Okay, a catchphrase that creates a moral vacuum in which right and wrong have no place. The exhibition contains work from 35 contemporary Chinese artists including Chen Ke, Chen Lei, Chen Xi, Feng Mengbo, Gao Jie, Gao Lei and Gao Yu. Tue-Sun 10am-7pm until September 30. UCCA
On Methods
On Methods presented by Three Shadows Photography Art Centre and the Goethe-Institut China, displays Candida Höfer's work (see main image), who studied photography under Bernd Becher at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf. This exhibition is the first comprehensive public display of her work in China and provides insight into the development and diversity of her means of working. Tue-Sun 10am-6pm until October 7. Three Shadows Photography Art Centre
Echo
ShanghART Beijing presents Lu Lei’s solo exhibition Echo, exhibiting his great sensitivity of the material texture and capability to accurately remain in control of his materials. A sense of allegory and classical mystery can be captured in his works. Tue-Sun 11am-6pm September 12 until October 11. ShanghART Beijing
New Directions
Tao Hui draws from folklore and films of his childhood, creating immersive video-installations bending boundaries of fiction and reality. The exhibition is composed of three digital media installations taking viewers through narrative structure and performance to an otherworldly realm. Tue-Sun 10am-7pm until October 18. UCCA
