Get Stuffed: Shopping and Delivery Options for Thanksgiving at Home

Expat metropolises like Beijing allow for a diverse mix of home traditions to mingle with many nationalities, and bring them together in the kindred spirit of solidarity. Thanksgiving Day on November 27 is certainly a well respected tradition from the American continent that emulates these ideas, and for those of us who live here it is a welcomed opportunity to bring loved ones from all corners of the globe close and spend an evening together sharing the love.

If you feel like celebrating Thanksgiving from the comfort of home, then approach one of these lovely vendors who will happily provide you with all the turkey and trimmings, or pick up all the pieces for a true do-it-yourself experience.

Chef Too has been doing Thanksgiving in the capital for a long time. Every year they cook up around 100 turkets, including sides and pumpkin pie, for take away. Reserve early as they will sell out.

Do-It-Yourself

April Gourmet sells imported turkeys for RMB 49.5/kg and hams. Some branches also have ready-made pumpkin pies at the deli counter. Delivery is free within a 3km radius, while return cab fare will have to be reimbursed for longer distances. Check with individual stores for pricing and availability. 

BHG Market Place sells frozen imported turkeys for RMB 60/kg.

Boucherie Michel sells imported US turkeys for around RMB 60/kg. The shop also sells cooked turkeys for RMB 108/kg.

City Shop sells frozen US Norbest turkeys for RMB 78/kg, with sizes ranging from 5.5kg to a whopping 22kg. Both Ocean Spray whole berry cranberry sauce and jellied cranberry sauce cost RMB 24 per can.

Jenny Lou’s sells frozen imported turkeys for RMB 55/kg, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and pumpkin pie filling.

Schindler’s Food Center sells frozen imported turkey for RMB 58/kg and local Chinese turkey for RMB 45-48/kg. It also stocks a range of hams both boned and bone-in.  

*If you are planning on doing your own turkey, note that the average weight of a Thanksgiving turkey is 15 pounds (or 6.6kg) so make sure your oven (and your wallet!) are prepared!
