Looking to change up your dining routine? Recently, a group of active local Beijing foodies, made up of more than 1,500 WeChat members and 150,000 Weibo followers, shared their top 20 dining spots in the city. We've selected a few of them to get you started, with the most affordable listed first. When you're done taste testing, don't forget to come back and share your thoughts below.
Ms Sugar
This popular cafe in The Place is the product of a friendship between Taiwanese celebrity Small S (Dee Hsu) and Hunan TV personality Xie Na. We're not certain whether people flock there for its coffee, toast, pancakes and chocolate lava cake or the fact that it's celebrity endorsed. Hopefully, it's a bit of both.
Average price per person: RMB 128
Daily 10am-12pm. L2, South street of The Place, 9 Guanghua Lu, Chaoyang District (6587 1558)
Schindler's Anlegestelle
The Sanlitun sister of Schindler's Tankstelle (the Filling Station) is no stranger to most of us. It has much in common with the original, including the same great sausages, more than ample portions of pork knuckle, and two-for-one draft beer during happy hour (5.30-7.30pm).
Average price per person: RMB 140
Daily 11am-1am. 10 Sanlitun Bei Xiaojie, Chaoyang District (6463 1108)
Diaoye Beef
Behind Diaoye's signature dishes are two secret recipes for beef tenderloin that they allegedly purchased from Hong Kong "cooking god" Dai Long for 5 million RMB. With that kind of price tag, we're assuming the Beijing Foodies are right in saying that this restaurant is a must-try, and you can't go wrong when choosing a meal when they have only 12 dishes on offer.
Average price per person: RMB 141
Daily 10am-2pm and 5pm-10pm. 6/F Chaoyang Joy City, 101 Chaoyang North Road, Chaoyang District (8552 8425)
Durian
Yes, we're talking about the well known Malaysian Musang King Durian. It's a pricey one in Beijing, but if it's your thing, you can get a good quality box of the frozen fruit for RMB 268 and have your pick from all things durian at this shop.
Average price per person: RMB 200
Daily 10am-10pm. 16-6, district D of Xingguang Dadao, Fulicheng, Shuangjing, Chaoyang District (5824 1538)
Pangu 7 Star Hotel Buffet
While Pangu is similar to many other five-star hotel buffets, what makes it stand out is that it places no restriction on the number of lobsters you can eat in one sitting. But before you can dig in, you must pass by the reknowned “lobster mountain” at the entrance to the restaurant.
Average price per person: RMB 457
Daily 11:30am-2:30pm and 6-10pm. 2/F Pangu 7 Star Hotel Beijing, 27 Middle North Fourth Ring Road, Chaoyang district (5906 7777)
