Live Through This: Cancer Still Beijing's Top Killer
The latest analysis shows cancer remains the leading cause of death for Beijing residents for the sixth year in a row. It's being reported one person is diagnosed with cancer every six minutes in China, which adds up to over 8,500 people every day.
But rather than lock yourself in an air-purified-bubble, it may be easier to just drop that Zhongnanhai. According to World Health Organization, at least one-third of all cancer cases are preventable. The top three causes of preventable cancer are tobacco use, physical inactivity and obesity, and alcohol use. The rate of lung cancer is the highest of all cancers in Beijing, the leading cause of which is, unsurprisingly, smoking. Most scientists agree, however, that the next highest cause, also unsurprisingly, is air pollution.

Re: Live Through This: Cancer Still Beijing's Top Killer
Considering the above facts (although it would have been nice if there had been a 10 year statistical chart to show this trend), it is TRULY surprising that tabacco sales is still State Owned, which can safely lead one to conclude that the government is more interested in profits. than the health of her citizens.
No other government in the developed or developing countries would have the blood of their citizens on their hand.
Let's hope that the Central government will look into this, and implement stringent rules and regulations to curb cigarette smoking. It will not solve anything if the government convert this SOE to a privately own enterprise, which oftentimes is the least problem solving but easy method.
