Talking Entertainment: Zajia Lab Shifts Gears
Art venue Zajia Lab has informed us they will be changing their operating model. As of July 1, the Gulou project space’s two rooms, one used for events and one which hosts the bar, will be split into two independent businesses: Zajia Lab // Beijing Project Space and Zajia Cafe & Bar.
The project space will still be hosting its regular program of film screenings, exhibitions, installations, performances and live music, but these will run separately from the bar which is being taken over by current bar manager Aming.
The new bar will also be hosting its own independent afternoon and evening events and should be seeing a completely revamped drinks and food menu.
Zajia Lab founder and art director Ambra Corinti is positive about the change, the bar hasn’t flourished the way she’d hoped - only offering Gulou culture vultures a basic selection of drinks. With new ownership they’re hoping things on the bar end can be spiced up a little. We’ll be keeping an eye out for more details on this change.
While we're on the topic of Zajia Lab, Electric Shadows is hosting a screening of I am Breathing there tonight. The documentary, about a father who becomes paralyzed and faces death, narrates his memories and perspectives on life through a series of warm and humorous blog posts which he wrote in his last months. This film has been receiving wide acclaim in the press and is definitely worth checking out.
Finally, today is Beijing Music Day and the city will be alive with sound tonight. In celebration, here’s a track from Randy Abel Stable. The locally-formed country act will be releasing their first album Stable Condition on June 29 to coincide with 'dazeFEAST 2013.
To keep you entertained through the week, here's a selection of the city's upcoming arts and culture events:
- Masks form around the world at the National Museum of China
- Journalist Philip Shiskin on Revolution, Murder and Intrigue in Central Asia
- B movies continue at Dada with Plan 9 from outer space
- Watch The Burbs on the Bookworm’s rooftop
