One "Mor" Thing: Morton's The Steakhouse Opens Up on Jinbao Jie

Things are going to get a little more meaty around here, now that American fine-dining chain Morton's of Chicago has opened its first steakhouse in Beijing at the Regent Hotel on Jinbao Jie. We haven't had a full sit-down meal there yet, but the buffet at the opening party was definitely a good sign of things to come.

The first Morton's in China landed in Shanghai in 2010, and the company also operates locations in Macao and Hong Kong. The Regent hotel location has 220 seats, including a sizable dining room, eight private suites and a private lounge room for wine aficionados. The restaurant will also include its signature temperature-controlled wine lockers.

Saturday's opening party was all out, and we were very happy with our meal. The steak held up quite well, given the buffet line, so I'm looking forward to trying it again when I get a chance to go back. Beyond steak, we also enjoyed the sea bass, oysters and salads.

If you're looking for the Morton's experience without the full price tag, the staff mentioned a happy hour special from 5-7pm on Monday through Friday: all-you-can-eat steak sandwiches for RMB 48. The pricing seemed too good to be true, but it was confirmed by multiple people on Saturday. Assuming it all pans out, this should join the hallowed ranks as one of the best deals in town. I'll be sure to check it out for myself soon.
