“Wei? Wei? WEI!!!???” New Measures to Torture Airline Passengers
Overzealous security, crying babies, airline food. Can’t stand it? Well add one more
annoyance to the list – onboard cell phone usage. According to a recent article, translated by China Hush, three major Chinese airlines have signed deals to design software that will allow passengers to jabber away 30,000 feet up in the air.
Sina Tech says the three airlines involved are Air China, China Southern, and China
Eastern. Passengers will be able to make phone calls for RMB 15 per minute. And yes, the service will also be available internationally, such as on flights to the United States.
Their reasoning behind such a service?
According to Wang Xiaolun, vice-president of cabin service at Air China, flight attendants often have to tell passengers to “turn off their cell phones before the plane takes off, which indicates the passengers’ need to communicate with the outside. Achieving communication via cellular phone above 10,000 meters will become an effective way to attract travelers and provide satisfactory services for the passengers.”
But we think this commenter on China Hush says it best, “This is not a need to be
connected, its just people being a bunch of jackasses.”
Being trapped in a tube flying 500 miles through the air with someone endlessly
yapping loudly throughout a 12-hour flight to Beijing is not my idea of “satisfactory
services.” If passengers truly feel the need to stay connected, a push for internet
service on long haul flights would be a better option. And according to this article from Information Week, apparently the technology for overwater internet service is already there.

Looks like the 3 airlines are denying that they signed the agreements to provide cell phone services in-flight.

What a nightmare. Air China is horrible as it is. On a recent flight to L.A, the guy in the row next to mine proceeded to take off his pants, shoes, and socks. He then laid down on the floor and went to sleep. It was 12 hours of hell being trapped with peasants who it appeared had never been on an airplane before. God help us all.

Man in seat in front of you: "Wei! Wei! Guess where I'm calling you from!!"
You (in your own mind as you are rattled from your sleep): "Please, for the love of god, shut the hell up..."

Hi jon.black.ba,
As far as I understand beyond a certain height a cell phone can't log into the relay stations on the earth's surface, which is necessary to make a call. So there would be no need to "block the normal signal" as there is no signal at 35,000 feet.
The new system will allow your phone to tap into a system on the plane itself, which will presumably relay the signal to satellites overhead.
I think you're being optimistic if you think no-one will use this service...

How does this work? They'll re-route your cellphone call for you? Phones were all over planes at least two decades ago when I started flying. Not cell phones though, you had to swipe your credit card in the back of the seat to get them out. Nobody ever used them, and I guess no one will use their cell phones on board any more than they currently do if they have to pay more for it.
Is this new service also going to block normal mobile phone usage so that we can't use them without paying for the (presumed) routing service?
