And the Winners Are ... the 2009 Beijinger Reader Restaurant Awards

Element Fresh, Da Dong Roast Duck, Maison Boulud and SALT were the among the big winners at the Beijinger’s 6th Annual Reader Restaurant Awards held on Monday at a gala ceremony in the Hilton Beijing.

Over canapés provided by the Hilton’s One East on Third, Wolf Blass wine from ASC and Stella Artois beer, 350 guests saw the Beijinger’s readers’ picks of the best of Beijing’s restaurants.
Shanghai import and Beijing newcomer Element Fresh won the coveted Restaurant of the Year in the non-Chinese category, narrowly besting runners up SALT and Mosto. Da Dong, last year’s favorite in the Chinese Restaurant of the Year category, took home the trophy again this year, while South Beauty and the Grand Hyatt’s Made in China were the runners up.
In addition to the overall award, Element Fresh won the readers’ poll for Best Sandwiches and was named Outstanding for Outdoor Dining and Outstanding for Brunch.

Maison Boulud was another newcomer with a big impact on readers, winning the Best French and Best Wine List categories while being named runners up in Outstanding Service and Outstanding For a Romantic Meal.

SALT, last year’s Restaurant of the Year winner, picked up the most awards of the afternoon – five – winning the Steak and Service categories outright, while getting Outstanding nods for Business Lunch, Restaurant of the Year and Wine List.

Hosts Ai Wan, the actress and creative entrepreneur behind China Doll, and journalist Steven Jiang led the ceremony in which awards were handed out in 35 categories over the course of a 3-hour ceremony featuring the smooth sounds of the Beijing Big Band led by Adam Lee.

Over 4,600 ballots were cast in the awards. Each vote was examined for eligibility: incomplete and duplicated ballots were discarded, as were numerous attempts at ballot stuffing. The remaining ballots were tabulated and each restaurant was ranked accordingly. The top three restaurants (one “Best” and two “Outstanding”) in each category were selected as Reader’s Picks.
Other multiple award winners included perennial favorites Annie’s (Best Italian, Best Value and Outstanding Family-Friendly Restaurant); Alameda (Best Business Lunch, Outstanding Steak and Outstanding Value) and Grandma’s Kitchen (Best standalone Brunch, Best Family-Friendly Restaurant and Outstanding Burger)
The full list of winners, along with picks from a panel of eight Beijing food experts, will be published in the April 2009 issue of the beijinger. Check out the full gallery of pics here.

Touche' Thedon,
I'm sorry to have offended you. But I'd be happy to have a cook off with you any day. what do you say? Spatulas and Santoku's at dawn? Biggrin
As far as canvassing the clientele of their restaurants, Like I said before, That is just not the way Element Fresh Does things.
Eating a sandwich at Element Fresh is certainly not the same as eating dishes at the other places. That would not be comparing apples to apples. Try The dinner menu at Element Fresh sometime while I'll admit it is not world class haute cuisine it is solid and well executed. I have eaten at all of the restaurants you mentioned. I agree that a good portion of them are great places and the food is good. But for what Element Fresh does do it does well.
What I am saying, and have said from the beginning. Element Fresh is a popular restaurant with great food and they got the most votes for best restaurant because of that fact. If you have a better idea on how to structure the awards by all means do your own awards or help the Beijinger do theirs with my blessing. if not, you are stuck with what you have.
It is obvious to me that you are in the business and feel slighted by the readers votes. Make your place the best in town! I'll vote for you if it's great food and Great service in a heartbeat. Prove the masses wrong! Go get 'em tiger!

Chefjeff,
do you really think that hygiene standards weigh into the best restaurant debate? Maison Boulud has a restaurant in New York. I highly doubt they would be canvassing their clientele to vote in a Beijing magazine restaurant competition.
Element Fresh is a nice, albiet overpriced, cafe serving generic US food. Kudos to you for working at some of the best restautants in the world. The fact that Element Fresh is a trumped-up cafe serving average American cuisine has nothing to do with your culinary background. Please, eat a sandwich at Element Fresh, then try a dish at Maison Boulud, Aqua or even Alameda. If you think EF's sandwich is better, then its no wonder you are the "former" culinary director of a cafe. Harsh chefjeff, but fair.

Thedon,
I agree with you that ANYONE can vote, but if you are implying that Element Fresh asked all of their customers to vote or somehow stuffed the ballots you are way wrong.
As former Culinary Director of the company I for one know that is just not the way they do things. Element Fresh has some of the highest quality and Hygiene standards I have ever seen in any restaurant company anywhere let alone in China.
Just because the restaurant has the same menu in all locations does NOT diminish the quality of ingredients served, or the recipes (some of which happen to be mine)
Don't try to tell me places like Maison Boulud don't have other outlets. I know they do.
I have been a chef for 20+ years, worked at some of the best restaurants in the world and have shared space in cook books (see One Fish Two Fish Crawfish Bluefish for example) with your "real restauranteurs" and have several multi star reviews under my belt while the kitchens were under my direction. I for one am quite proud of the food Element Fresh served while I was in their employ.
Please don't insult me or anything you don't truly know anything about.
regards,

Grama's Kitchen - Winner of the free standing best WHAT!!!

Brunch is the word you're looking for -- Best standalone Brunch.

Your choices:

ice cream

BTW
We went to Maison Boloud with great expectation.
Sadly it did not meet with expectation...rather disappointed!
On the other hand Sureno was to be recommended.

Grama's Kitchen - Winner of the free standing best WHAT!!!
We went to try this outlet at Soho based on your winners' chart.
We should have walked out the second we walked in. The resturant smells and messy and so so tire looking. We proceeded upstairs and the smells lingered, again we should have walked out but then thought we should give the place a chance - again based on the winning title.
It was easily the worst meal we ever had in our lives!
Staffs were scruffy, table cloth smell and the cleaning lady was standing by the customers' table PICKING HER NOSE!!!
Lowest quality of ice cream in the form of sundea dripping all over the small glass, it tasted so bad so cheap and so messy.
Deep fry mushroom, instead of the standard button mushroom, they were the large size cut into quarters and so so grease and tasteless with watery tasteless dip.
Spicy wings, deep fry with chilli sauce poured over the absolutely tasteless wings with four small pieces of dried up celery.
Ham and Cheese sandwich, supposed to be on slice bread but it came in some cheap bread bun with hardly any cheese in sight! Fries were acceptable.
I thank lord they forgot my meatloaf order as at this point we asked for the bill and left and never ever to return ever again.
My husband and I were planning to try out all your winners and now based on our experience. NO THANK YOU Sad

Remember the READER awards are voted on by the READERS of the Beijinger and if that many people like a particular restaurant they must be doing SOMETHING right..... maybe not your personal choice but hey opinions are like Butt holes everybody has one. It has had nothing, nor ever has had anything to do with how much a particular establishment advertises.

Chef Jeff, I think you are leaving one very important thing out - it is not just READERS as you say that can vote - ANYONE can. In other words, if you have a massive data-base of customers (such as Element Fresh with sandwich shops in two major cities) then you have a huge voting power if everyone votes. Element Fresh is a great sandwich shop/cafe - please don't insult real restaurateurs and restaurants here in Beijing (as mentioned before such as Maison Boloud, Blue Lobster etc) by comparing a shop that sells a standardised menu in all of its locations. Everyone knows that Element Fresh winning is a bit of a joke - no offense, but don't kid yourself.

BTW those that disagree with the Masses will definitely want to pick up the April issue of the Beijinger as it contains not only the Reader's Pics for the city's best restaurants, but our Experts' Panel Picks as well.

Element fresh is a great restaurant and I would argue that they offer one of the best sandwiches in the city. But to call element fresh THE best restaurant in the city is a bit ridiculous.

To compare a restaurant like Element Fresh to that of Maison Boloud, Jaan, or Whampoa Club is just a bit off. The creativity and thought that these restaurants put into all aspects of their business create a nearly flawless experience, while element fresh is a great place to have a salad on a tuesday afternoon.

Let's all try and remember that popular opinion is often flawed. Think communism, Mac Donald's and The Jonas Brothers.

I agree, this is The Beijinger, not Le Guide Rouge. I kind of agree on Element Fresh - it is great value considering the fact that you get fresh, tasty and healthy food. I would however love for them to be all-organic, but this is after all China, not heaven. Though I think my PERSONAL favourite in the city is Kagen.

www.dearbeijing.blogspot.com

and another thing.... the categories are also chosen by the readers and when you vote you are always welcome to post a write in candidate, so if you feel your personal choice is not listed write one in! if enough votes are written in for a certain establishment then it will appear in the results.... simple as that!

Remember the READER awards are voted on by the READERS of the Beijinger and if that many people like a particular restaurant they must be doing SOMETHING right..... maybe not your personal choice but hey opinions are like Butt holes everybody has one. Massive joke ... hmm.

A popular restaurant with a long-established reputation and multiple locations in Shanghai moves to the center of Sanlitun, into a trendy development, does roaring business from the Olmypics onward. Try getting in there without a wait on a weekend afternoon. I'd say "massive joke" is perhaps overstating your case.

What's your choice for restaurant of the year, Some Random?

Hi Alex -- We're open to any and all suggestions on further classification of the awards.

No system is perfect. We've often considered other ways of classification, but already with 35 awards we are pushing the upper limit of the number of questions that can be effectively asked in a single survey.

For instance, in your example of French restaurants, we could sub-classify them into

Best French (Under RMB100)
Best French (Over RMB100)

or

Best Cheap French
Best Premium French

or

Best Locally-Owned French
Best Overseas-Invested French

or
Best Single-Location French
Best Multiple-Location French

... but each of these sub-classifications has its problems as well -- among them (a) the objections that some restaurants might have of being put in a particular category; (b) the fact that once parsed into smaller categories there may no longer be enough candidates in one category, and (c) the fact that, if done in many categories, we are then asking our readers to not vote in 35 categories, but 50 or 70 or even more ...

Generally we do this balloting to call attention to what's great in Beijing. It certainly is not perfect, but we do believe that it gives people a nice picture of the choices available to them in Beijing.

PS: we're The Beijinger, we have nothing to do anymore with 'that's Beijing'. It's been a year since our former government partner summarily kicked us out of that business and we switched names.

It s a good thing to reward restaurants and bars but the way it is done is ridiculous!!!!!!!

How can you compare a Maison Boulud with a Le Petit Gourmand to name an exemple among many others!!!

Tha t s beijing should revise the way it rewards businesses! This is a reason I have not answered the document before to vote...and I know a lot of places here and also work in the food and beverage industry!

That s beijing, review the way you categorize the awards for next year!

Morel's, La Taverne and Metro - while all excellent restaurants in my personal opinion - were not nominated in the nomination round, which was based on the votes of 200 people - there was no "lack of payment" or advertising interest involved, as you suggest.

You should note that a large portion of nominees and winners have never advertised in the magazine.

Jerry Chan, Digital Marketing & Content Strategy Director

element fresh, salt, alameda all a joke.
Best hotel brunch Westin? Where is Kranzler.
Best Italien Annie (food okay but not original taste)
Best brunch grandma's kitchen (yak!)
Value for money Annies (should probably be Schiller's good German junk food) and so on Wink Morel's, la Taverne and Metro do not pay enough so do not get posted at all...
