What’s Up in Beer: New Beer, New Old Beer, Sunset Yoga Beer, and a Beeriversary
Hooray to lìqiū 立秋, the beginning of autumn and the end of the dog days of summer! Though it's forecast to rain both Saturday and Sunday, that's no excuse to not drink crisp, refreshing beers, right? Luckily for us, there are new and returning brews hitting the tap, an outdoor session of beery yoga, and a celebration in aid of NBeer's anniversary. Let's get to it!
Great Leap Brewing has launched their new 1st Tier Prophet (4.9 percent ABV) on draught, which is poured from a Nitro tap and brewed using lightly roasted Colombian coffee, Tahitian vanilla, and Styrian General hops. Despite its beautifully pale and straw color, the strong coffee aroma cuts through alongside the fresh vanilla notes, and there's a stout-like mouthfeel courtesy of the Nitro tap. Grab a pint now for RMB 40 at both GLB locations.
A new member has joined Jing-A’s One Hop Policy family: the Lumberjack, using hops from the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada. This single-hop hazy pale ale, brewed with Lumberjack hops, gives the beer a piney bitterness and notes of sweet citrus and melon, as well as floral aromas. Alongside this new brew, they'll also have a new batch of Paihuanggua on tap as of Friday (Aug 10).
Sticking with Jing-A, the team is combining with The Rug Café and Lululemon to put on a yoga-beer-sunset party at The Rug Cafe WFC this Saturday, Aug 11. The yoga session, from 6.30-7.30pm at the Serpentine Pavilion, WF Central, will be led by a professional from Lululemon, who will help you breathe out the summer heat from your body (click here to register the yoga session for free). The hour-long class will be followed by a chance to reboot your energy with food and brews at the Rug's Sunset Set Kickoff (check the menu here). This week Slow Boat has two favorites return to their taps: The S.O.S. Belgian Wit (3.5 percent ABV) and White Cap IPA (7 percent ABV ). The former is an easy-drinking Belgian-style wheat beer, spiced with coriander and orange peel: “No time or need for an orange slice,” as Slow Boat puts it. The latter beer is a play on the relatively new white IPA genre, making for a hoppy wheat beer with strong citrus flavor, mild Belgian-style fruit notes, and a strong aromatic punch. Just right for stormy Beijing summers, when the winds kick up, skies grow dark, and the thunder begins to roll.
The sailors will also have two beers from Wuhan No. 18 brewery available this week: Donghu Breeze Summer IPA, which is an easy sipper with low bitterness and a well-rounded hop profile, as well as prized English Maris Otter malt which lends it a refreshing and balanced mouthfeel. Copious dry-hopping means that this IPA rocks a complex fruit-bomb fragrance. The second brew is a Fog and Haze Wheat with a light yellow color and low haziness, with aromas of citrus and spice balanced against a full malty flavor.
Last but not least, NBeer celebrates its fifth anniversary (how time flies!) today, Aug 10. To get the party going, they've stocked four milkshake IPAs – matcha, muskmelon, peal, and wolfberry – representing spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. Grab yours and cheers the NBeer crew from today onwards.
