Beijing Karl Long Challenge 2022 Rules Officially Announced

We wrote a few weeks ago about the official announcement of the Karl Long Challenge in honor of Great Leap’s 12th anniversary. This year they did a special nationwide Karl Long Challenge that took place in six cities across China on Oct 15. The Beijing contest, has been delayed to Oct 29 due to certain *ahem* meetings.

In case you missed our last post and are wondering just who Karl Long is and why he has a challenge named after him, here is the story as Great Leap tells it:

“Back in 2010, when Great Leap was still in its infancy, Karl Long – who would go on to help manage GLB #12 for a time – showed up to the brewery’s original Doujiao Hutong location. At the time, they only offered eight beers on tap, and Karl elected to try all of them at once. Then he drank them all again, for a grand total of 16 beers in one sitting!

As the story goes, he got into an argument with a fellow patron who he mistook for Sabrina, of Sabrina the Teenage Witch fame, after which he proceeded to remove his shirt and unleash a menacing growl.

Thus the legend of Karl Long, and the Karl Long Challenge, were born.”

As usual the rules are that competitors have to drink 15 beers across all four Great Leap locations, collecting a stamp for every beer you finish on a stamp card, with the added requirement of drinking at least one beer per Beijing Great Leap location. All those who complete the challenge will win a Great Leap Chinese style fan, a GLB Anniversary Song Dynasty style T-Shirt and probably one hell of a hangover come Sunday.

This year there are two different challenges to choose from: Plan A and Plan B. For Plan A, competitors must drink 15 330ml glasses of beer; whereas for Plan B, competitors must drink 15 440ml glasses of beer. Ten of the beers are already pre-selected, but the remaining five beers can be chosen by the competitors.

To take part you’ll need to purchase an Event Passport Card (Plan A is RMB 350, Plan B is RMB 398) which will be available from Oct 24, or can be purchased from any of Great Leap's locations on the day.

Now, as if that wasn’t enough of a fun time, Great Leap will also be having their annual Halloween Party the same day at their No.12 (Gongti) and No. 45 (Xinyuanli) locations. There will be a costume competition at both parties with prizes being awarded for Best Solo Costume and Best Team Costume. Best Solo Costume will win a RMB 888 gift certificate and Best Team Costume will win an RMB 1288 gift certificate.
