Capital Bites: Free-flow Wine at Pinotage and Another Gung Ho!

I can't think of a time when free-flow is a bad thing and today is no exception. Ladies, if you find yourself in Sanlitun in the afternoon or evening (noon-2am) with some time to kill, take note: Pinotage Sanlitun is the stop. They are celebrating South African National Women's Day, and RMB 200 will get you free-flow on all wines (and they have quite a stock) plus a welcome glass of sparkling wine and a voucher for a Kocoon spa treatment.

There's a whole host of new openings around town. Thursday afternoon was the official opening of Okra 1949, Max Levy's new spot for sushi, sake and cocktails. The space is tucked back in Hidden City 1949 and, starting this coming Tuesday, will be open with regular evening hours weekly from Tuesday through Saturday. If the small bites offered Thursday were any indication, Okra should be a solid spot for some fresh fish.

Over in Central Park near Costa Coffee, 108 Noodle House is now serving up their eponymous product. Around the corner from Obentos, Fruit Me Up has opened just in time for the hottest month of the year. If you don't like your fruit straight up, they should have you covered with their smoothies and frozen yogurt.

Will Wangjing become the new "it spot"? Seems doubtful now, but this past month has seen the opening of a second Obentos location as well as Pak Pak, a new Thai joint from Amy Li of Susu, and in the spring Loft Eatalicious from Roberto Masili of Bantu (reviews of these last two forthcoming).

Whatever it means for the rest of us, anyone in Wangjing should be pleased. Gung Ho! Pizza continues the trend with the spread of their empire there. In September, their fourth location will be opening in Kirin Place next to the upcoming Wangjing Soho. Like the Shuangjing outpost, this store will be delivery-only.

Those of you with sugar cravings, look forward to Sweet Tooth Bakery's upcoming new bakery and cafe space in Sanlitun. Unfortunately this means that they will be halting their delivery service for the month of August. Delivery will resume following August 31 and we'll keep you posted on their store's opening date once it's confirmed.

mtnerror,

Thanks for the gentle and well-worded reminder. I do live far from Wangjing (somewhat near Xidan, actually) so perhaps that colors it personally. I didn't intend for this particular instance to imply that we write for a readership within a certain geographical boundary nor do I think we want to give that impression (I hope that people all over the city are reading this!).

All too often whenever WJ is mentioned, it's accompanied with "if you're up in" or "way out in" or "whatever it means for the rest of us," hinting that whoever "us" is lives way the he** away from WJ. People who live in Xidan might consider Gongti unpleasurable to transport to, or those near Andingmen may consider Shuangjing a trek, or WDK'ers to Lido. Encourage writing from a perspective that this is indeed a huge metropolis, with locals and foreigners alike (both whom read this fine publication) all over the place.
