Really good food, bad service

It is really hard to find a good western restaurant in BJ so it is an even bigger disappointment when you find one with really nice food that is ruined by not knowing or not following the western practice of dinning.

Let me explain.

I came for Saturday lunch with my girlfriend and maitre'd and the staff was really nice and helpful.

We ordered our food and the first course arrived really quickly. Mushroom soup was really creamy and tasty. So was the foire gras with fig jam. Delicious. Then the problem starts. After maybe a minute or two of enjoying our first course, we were served the main course. You just don't do that. Western food is not served like this. Of course that my really delicious and well grilled (raw) stake was cold by the time I finished the first course. So was my girlfriends pasta which was slightly overcooked. My fries with parmiggiano were also cold.

In the middle of all of this, we were served souffle which we did not order. The waiter said it is a dessert with compliments from the house. We thanked them. After finishing the main course we dig into the souffle which was by that time, you guessed it, cold. The crust was not crunchy anymore but chevy like a gum. And it was not dessert sweet souffle but a meat one.

Western dining or lunching is an event. social event. You sit, eat, drink, talk, laugh, relax. Then repeat it all with the main course... then with the dessert... It is not supposed to be delivered to the table at the same time so we can hurry up and stuff it in our mouth. The Chinese and western way of serving food differ and both should be respected.

It is such a shame that the quality of cooking which is really among the better I experienced in BJ was destroyed by poor service. Such a shame to eat cold dishes and to eat it in a hurry and not be able to enjoy.

So my advice to the staff of Hulu and all other western restaurants in BJ. Don't serve all at once, follow the rules, let the people enjoy good food and relax. Don't hurry us up, because, in the end, you will lose customers instead of gaining them.

Such a shame for Hulu since the food is really nice. That's why I only give it three stars!

Hi Evan.

My experience with Hulu was not a bad one since the food is really nice but it was spoiled by things i mentioned above.

You just need to take care about the timing of bringing the food to the table. It takes some better organization but it is managable and guests will have better experience.

I am sure i will visit your establishement again because the food is really great.
