Review of Q Mex Bar & Grill
After reading someone say this was the best mexican they possibly ever had, i wanted to try it. it was half price burritos. my gf and i both got burritos and salads. the burritos are not fresh, they were both cold and clearly microwaved or heated up for a few minutes. they gave us the food about 2 minutes after we ordered. my gf got sick about 2 hours later and i felt bad the whole night. the number of mosquitoes inside was also ridiculous. waiters were overbearing but decent.
this place will be closed soon barring a miracle.

Re: Got food poisoning, food was crap
Let me start by introducing myself - I am Marcus Medina, executive chef and one of the owners of the newly reopened Q Mex. Without questioning the veracity of the previous review, I wanted to respond to some of the statements made.
First of all, I can assure everyone that here at Q Mex we follow the strictest standards for food safety and cleanliness – the same high level of quality that I have demanded of all my restaurants, including those in California and New York.
I received my initial culinary training in Mexico City at the legendary Escuela de Alta Cocina run by Patricia Quintana, one of Mexico’s most famous chefs. We were extensively trained not only in Mexican cuisine and cooking techniques but also in food safety and kitchen operations. I brought my love of Mexican food and devotion to high standards to my first restaurant – a Mexican taqueria – that my brother and I opened 32 years ago in central California.
After 12 years of running our restaurant in California, we move to New York and opened “The Taqueria” in Park Slope, Brooklyn. We were one of the first to introduce California style burritos to New York City. For five years straight we were in the top five “Best Value,” in Zagat’s NYC restaurant guide.
In NYC, I also served as executive chef of a regional restaurant chain called “Blockheads”, opened a gastro diner near Times Square called “Vynl”, and later opened another very successful Mexican restaurant called “Rachel’s Taqueria” (named for my mother), which my brother and I still own and operate.
In the course of operating these restaurants, I personally designed and oversaw food safety training programs for all of my employees, teaching them the techniques of food handling and food sanitation. I have always taken the health and safety of my customers extremely seriously, and my team at Q Mex is well-trained and just as committed as I am to serving delicious, creative, and safe food.
I would like to offer the previous reviewer a free meal to reassure him that his ailment did not originate from us because everything I ever learned about food safety tells me that it is virtually impossible to get food poisoning only two hours from having your meal. Also we invite the previewer or any other interested reader – a personal tour of the Q Mex kitchen. Come by any time and ask for Marcus – you can find me in the kitchen making the same delicious Mexican food that I have devoted the last three decades of my life to. I look forward to welcoming you to the new Q Mex.
Re: Got food poisoning, food was crap
The owner says that "everything I ever learned about food safety tells me that it is virtually impossible to get food poisoning only two hours from having your meal." Sorry this makes me think you haven't learned too much about food safety. From my personal experience I know that you can get food poisoning within two hours. In fact, just try googling it and you'll see websites saying that it can kick in within one hour, for example see here: http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/food-poisoning/understanding-food-poisoning-symptoms. The unfortunate truth is that most food poisoning cases are caused by employees not washing their hands after using the bathroom which can happen in any restaurant in the world.
By the way, I used to go to the Tacqueria on 7th avenue in the Slope all the time. Was sorry when it closed.
Disclaimer: I had to give a rating to post this response. I've never eaten at the new Q-Mex and just had magaritas a few times at the old one. I thought the magaritas were very good, but then I sat at the bar and explained in Mandarin exactly how to make them to my liking to the bartender.
Re: Got food poisoning, food was crap
I have a background in food safety and sanitation at the state and federal levels in the USA and using the word "impossible" can get you int trouble. I'm sure the owner of Q-Mex is diligent in food handling but by not having all the facts and information, he should not be making that kind of statement.
Food poisoning or food borne illness can occur within 30 minutes or even days after exposure. It depends on the amount and type of bacteria or agents that caused the distress. Each person also has a degree of tolerance that can resist or promote the symptoms.
The most common error is to believe that although you have given your employees all the necessary training, it still leaves it up to the individual to PRACTICE good hygience and safe food handling procedures. It is a habit for me to constantly wash but it may not be for others. People tend to "forget" to wash their hands or avoid cross contamination in the kitchen when handling different foodstuffs.
All it takes is for a worker to forget or skip a procedure in food safety to cause a serious problem. I have seen a worker barely wash his hands, literally passing his hands under the water for a few seconds and to him, constitutes "washing" when he merely rinsed his hands.
Food safety and safe food handling is a constant vigil for everyone. No one can make guarantees for another person. The owner leaves himself wide open for possible liability defending something that might be indefensible.
Re: Got food poisoning, food was crap
I want to thank the previous reviewer for her kind words regarding the closing of my restaurant, “The Taqueria,” in Park Slope Brooklyn more than four years ago. However, “Rachel’s,” successor to, “The Taqueria,” is still there, if anyone is in the neighborhood and would like to visit. There we offer the same great food, service and drinks as before at our 7th Ave. location.
Another descendant to, “The Taqueria,” is Q Mex. We offer similar food, focusing on Cal-Mex, Tex-Mex and authentic regional Mexican dishes. After two and a half years here in Beijing I always find it gratifying to come across someone who has visited and enjoyed one of my restaurants in NYC.
Re: Got food poisoning, food was crap
The fact that you can get food poisoning anywhere between 30 minutes and several days means its virtually impossible to pinpoint the cause of food poisoning -- since most of us put multiple things in our mouth multiple times a day.
For this reason, i hate to see people post reviews of places citing with certainty that they contracted food poisoning from the venue. Its just not that simple to pinpoint.
