While I'm sure the regular food is decent, as a proud fanatic of most things sweet I just had to write this about their desserts as I was utterly shocked by how bad they were. Maybe they will take some hints and make some improvements if they want to keep competing with other cafes/restaurants.
I've never been to the restaurant itself, but today I had a huge craving for some sweets and saw their menu on Sherpa's, the delivery service. Since it was happy hour, and thus free delivery, I decided to order the three best-sounding desserts: the chocolate cake, lemon square, and cinnamon roll. 15 RMB each. Basic and straightforward, right?
The chocolate cake was the most decent one, but it still was probably only a 4 out of 10. While many times coffee can be imperceptibly used to intensify the flavor of chocolate in chocolate cake, this cake tasted oddly of mostly coffee and barely any rich chocolate flavor--possibly not enough sugar? It was a bit too dry, and the crumb was just strange.
The lemon square looking promising, but this was not a lemon square! It had way too much flour in it, so it was more like a soft lemony cake (similar to Japanese cheesecake) instead of the lemon custard it should have been. It was edible though. 3 out of 10.
The cinnamon roll was the saddest one of all, a 1 out of 10. It was like a larger version of those pre-packaged cinnamon rolls you get as part of your in-flight meal (on Air China), but worse. It was so cardboard-y dry and hard that it definitely seemed like it was a several days old. The "cinnamon" filling inbetween the layers was not sweet at all. And there was no icing/glaze on top. Did not taste any sweetness at all. Dry and bland--I did not finish it.
So Moka, please take this as a gentle hint that you can do waaay better with your desserts! There are tons of well-reviewed recipes for these three basic items on www.allrecipes.com. Any one of these recipes will make your desserts taste 10 times better (and sell better too, I'm sure)! In the meantime, for consistently delicious and authentic western desserts, stick with Wagas! I consider my duty to all you major sweet tooths, done.
*Edit: Okay, so I NOW realize that these were not meant to be "American" desserts, and that that was a Swedish Cinnamon Roll. So at least you know what to expect. But really, that cinnamon roll was pretty awful (I'm sure not representative of all Swedish cinnamon rolls). Now that I think about it, I remember having had an IKEA cinnamon roll and that tasted way better--at least I could finish it!
