As soon as I saw an article on this place in The Beijnger, I decided to check it out. My attention was drawn by the "bread" part of the new establishment. I love bread, I make my own bread at home and will always appreciate a place that serves their own home-made produce.
I never was at the former Beilou bar, so don't have a point of reference - don't know if the new place is better or worse in any respect. I simply like it. It feels homey and, competent (which numerous places in Beijng are lacking in). I spoke to three memeners of the staff and they all seemed laid-back and cool. Having said that, I probably got myself exposed to critical comments (yes, I've read them all) of the ones who don't approve of "fake" reviews. Anyway, I will try to prove mine isn't fake, following the pieces of advice given by you, dear users.
The first time I went to the bar, I had a dark bread sandwich with all the possible veggies they had, and a slice of cheese (which I usually don't eat). They asked me if I wanted some extra home-made pesto, free of charge. Having it wasn't a mistake at all. The bread was really nice, though I prefer multi-grain one. They have 2 more kinds of bread, if I'm not mistaken, but haven't tried them yet. I asked if they had soy milk to have a soy latte, and heard they'd run out of it, which implies that they normally had it. Well, I'll have to check it out next time. Hope they really use it. The espresso I had was nice (coffee from the Rickshaw Roasters). On the second occasion (went there again the same day to meet my freind) I had pasta arrabbiata with tomato sauce and fresh parsley. I was pretty good, but to my suprised I tasted ketchup in it. Though I was sure of the taste, I asked the staff if there really was ketchup in it. Unfortunately, I was right. Well, guess that could be improve. Wanting to serve authentic western food, you must a bit higher standards. I'm not saying, however, that it was too bad to eat - I finished it all. The selection on Belgian beers isn't most impressive in the city, but they have this Bayern beer that really rocks (40kuai a bottle). Was told by one of the guys that it's the only place in Beijing that has this beer. Cool...
I'm sure I will be visiting the place more often in the future. And guys, don't you want to consider having some more veg/vegan options for your sandwiches? Some nice veggie pastes and spreads. Can give a few ideas
