Went there last night because we wanted something new instead of ordering Annies the way we usually do on a lazy night. I quickly realized that we should have stayed home. The food was EXACTLY the same.
Not just similar dishes… the wording on the menu, the names, the prices, the descriptions. This place reeks of another sad story of former employee of a successful place, rips off the menu and opens their own spot.
We ordered the Mixed grilled meat platter, a calzone, a lasagna, fried mozzarella and white wine.
Even the layout of the food on the plate was a picture perfect representation of Annies. The small pot of gravy, one sausage, one lamb chop, one medallion of (tough) beef, one small chicken breast, 3 slices of coloured peppers, one small carrot with the greens still attached…. It was eerie. The lasagna came in the same bowl as Annies and looked and tasted the same, the calzone was the same… the only thing that was slightly different was the mozzarella sticks, they used a finer batter rather than the crumbs Annies uses.
The people next to us ordered 2 very familiar looking pizzas and the prices were the same down to the kuai.
This place IS Annies. It’s a huge shame that they didn’t try to do something unique because Annies already does what they do well. We need variety, not copycats.
The staff were nice but the Chinese manager who tries to talk in an Italian accent was overbearing and interrupted us too many times to “check that our meal was to our liking”.
The food was all fine, not great, just fine. The décor is nicer than next door but they should refine their menu and give us something new.
Yawn.

Re: Why does everyone love this place?
People love this place maybe because its the 'same quality' as Annies, that means it's good.
To score Alio Olio 2 stars is just ridiculous.

Re: Why does everyone love this place?
What is your problem? Both are mediocre restaurants that fullfill our expat needs for american-italian food, and especially as the Annies next door is closed for renovation its a good alternative. If you need real italian food dont look for it in Beijing.
