Review of Raying Temple
5

It's in Tongzhou, which is far, but doable. That said:

I haven't found a cooler place in all of Beijing. Their Temple is very much that, housing a number of local badasses who spend their days putting a mic up to the abyss. Having admitted that soul-numbing dating and the bumber2bumber fast-lane lifestyle of China are both aesthetically assailing and ultimately damn one to an ascetic lifestyle however you play your cards, they took it upon themselves to band together and do what they like in a fortified environment. To reference Evola, these guys are riding the tiger of the modern age.

Social praises aside, the music they make is solid and original. One needs an ear for Noise music to be able to sniff out novelty, and these guys have a fair odor of originality incensing their sacred temple. Compared to the hideous parodies parading around Beijing as "bands", and the stultifying 'scenes' stretching the butthole of Beijing art to engulf even that which lies beyond the 4th ring-road, these Raying dudes have something going for them. Anyway it's not just noise, the styles do vary, but novelty is an appreciable constant.

What's most impressive is how unimpressed they are with everyone else trying to be so impressive. They're doing fine without mainstream attention, whilst every other rock star is vying to end up on a KTV screen.

If you're going to make the Tongzhou trek, do it with a few buddies because you'll likely end up catching a cab back at the end of the night (which ain't too bad), and bring a fistful of dollars to buy up CD's and drinks. Did I mention there's a good bar? There's also a boat.
