Visisted Home Plate with some friends last night and was pleasantly surprised to find that finally, at long last, there is proper barbecue available in Beijing -- and at pretty reasonable prices, too. I can personally vouch for the pulled pork and chopped beef sandwiches, and the brisket was excellent. The beer selection is good (Rogue Dead Guy, Brooklyn Lager, etc.), the owner is a nice guy, and the restaurant has plans to start offering delivery in a few months. This has the potential to be a real improvement in quality of life here.
Downsides: right now the restaurant is a little on the small side. There are tables set up outside, but I'm not sure how well this will work once it starts getting cold out -- and just as we were leaving yesterday evening, some chengguan pulled up at the other end of the street and started harassing some Uyghur restaurant owners about having tables outside, so who knows how long this will last.
It's also not the easiest place to find, and the phone number given on the website doesn't seem to work. Basically, once you're on the north side of Xiaoyun Lu at Kro's Nest, walk a couple of paces east until you get to a large restaurant (口福居) that's set back from the street -- this is #25 Xiaoyun Lu. Walk through the gate and go straight, passing the restaurant and going down the alley, until the alley opens up onto an east-west street running parallel to Xiaoyun Lu. Take a left and walk towards the west end of the street; Home Plate is near the end, past several noodle and chuanr places.

Those folks weren't getting harassed cos they had tables outside - they were getting harassed cos they were Uyghurs. Sad but (probably?) true.
