Body Balance is in the basement level (B1) of an office park building. I would describe it as a Chinese style fitness center with Western branded equipment.
Equipment overview:
• Any kind of machine you could want, mostly Nautilus brand
• Dumbbells, benches, chairs, and other free weights, mostly marked in pounds but some in kilograms
• Aerobics room with daily classes
• A dozen or so treadmills, half of them US brands, half of them Chinese generic brands
• A few stair steppers and that sort of thing
• Stationary bicycle room
• Rock climbing treadmill (with no safety mat beneath it)
Other facilities:
• Locker room with a shower. Inside the shower they have little signs in Chinese that read "please do not urinate or defecate in the shower". Who is this intended for? Do they have 3 year olds using this gym? Everyone should know better than to piss and crap in the shower.
• No toilets – you have to walk out of the gym down the hall about 50 meters to the public rest room, where there are sure to be several guys smoking and taking dumps on the squat toilets
• Drinking water from a water fountain
• Body fat tester. Ask one of the gym staff nicely and they'll give you a nice print out of your muscle and body fat.
Price range:
I believe the price range for a membership should be around CNY 1,000 for 6 months, or CNY 2,000 for 12 months. I'd be curious to know how many members have done better than this price.
Positives:
• Good equipment
• Convenient location
• Fair price
• Approachable, friendly trainers. They may focus on selling their services to you at first, but even after it's clear you'll not be hiring them, they're still very nice and cordial.
Negatives:
• Maintenance of the equipment is very slow. The Natuilus dip / pull up machine required 5 months for the staff to replace some of the padding on the the armrest. There are 3 or 4 treadmills that have been broken for at least half a year so far, with no sign of being fixed.
• Sometimes pieces of equipment disappear and never come back. There was a high quality speed bag at one point in the gym. One day, it got removed from the gym completely and was never replaced.
• No sweat rags provided. On more than one occasion, I've had to scold new members for not wiping their nasty sweat off the machines when they're done using them. Providing a pile of sweat towels to members would probably alleviate this issue.
• Can be too hot occasionally in the summer. The gym has central air conditioning from the office building, and it also has 3 independent air conditioners. Even with all of these running, it can be very uncomfortable.
• The front desk staff like to keep the doors open and let the nasty Beijing pollution blow in. I've raised this point and the problem gets solved for 30 minutes. Then they open the door again and the pollution blows in yet again.
