Talking Tunes: Johnny Rotten and Co. Confirm, and French Chart-Topper to Headline GWMF
David Guetta F. Nicki Minaj – "Turn Me On"
We didn't believe that speculation either. Times are definitely changing in Beijing when Johnny Rotten gets the nod for a tourist visa so soon after Elton John supposedly went and spoiled the party for the rest of us. Catch PiL live at Yugong Yishan on March 30. You can get tickets here.
Another nugget of news we got this week: French chart-topper and double Grammy winner David Guetta will headline the Great Wall Music Festival in May. Andy C was another big name in "Phase 1" of the confirmations. News on phase 2 when we get it.
We don't do enough rumor-mongering for my liking in Talking Tunes. I'm often tempted to make up my own. This one isn't flat-out fictional, but I've been forewarned to expect confirmations of shows by Scottish indie chartsters Travis (who currently have a confirmed Korea date in June) and German krautrock veterans Kraftwerk (who are scheduled for an Asia jaunt beginning in May) in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed.
I wished that "in the general area" logic applied the same when I realized earlier this week that both Blur and Sigur Ros are to play in Hong Kong in May. Good news if you're south-bound for a visa run around that time. Regardless, hasn't it been a while since you had a night out in Wanchai? Perhaps it's time to book some time off.
Enough of the hypothetical. Here are some upcoming highlights:
- San Diego five-piece We Shot The Moon play Yugong Yishan tomorrow night (Mar 1).
- Shanghai rockers Stegosaurus? are in town tomorrow night as they celebrate the release of their latest record at Temple.
- Stalwarts of the No Beijing movement White+ and Snapline play School on Saturday night (Mar 2).
- This coming Wednesday (Mar 6) sees US metalcore quintent Miss May I take on Yugong Yishan.
That's by no means the sum of the upcoming music shows. Head over to our events section for a trove of happenings.

Seems our 'little birdy' was on the money, but didn't take into account the capricious nature of those who decide who can perform here

Alas, for Kraftwerk fans - it looks like they won't be coming to Beijing after all.

No doubt that Kraftwerk is more known for their pioneering electronic music than their days as a rock band but they were a direct influence on many latter day Krautrock bands - check out their song "Heavy Metal Kids" - sounds like Black Sabbath.
Anyway, would be great to see them in Beijing - The Guardian ran a great feature on them recently and their show at the Tate Modern sold out in minutes.

It's a bit like calling Pantera a hair metal band. Or Apple "the company behind the Apple Newton".

I think the jury is still out on Kraftwerk being pioneers of Krautrock
If you're on a VPN check out this video of them in 1971

On two minor notes of pedantry:
- I don't believe John Lydon has gone by the name Johnny Rotten since 1978
- Kraftwerk are not Krautrock (like Can or Tangerine Dream) but pioneers of electronica.
