Hike up on to the ridgeline of the mountains opposite Miaofengshan Temple and make a big 16km loop all the way around, climbing 1,000m-plus on the way.

This trail covers most of the ‘Three Peaks’ (San Feng / 三峰) track that’s popular with trail runners. Because we’re starting in the middle, and not doing the big climb up from Dajue Temple, our version is more like a ‘mini’ Three Peaks.

Cost: ¥390 / ¥350 for members

Take a short hike through fields and up through pine forest for an overview of the tombs complex from the ridgeline of its shield of hills, and then take a walking tour through the tombs. Price includes expensive tickets.

The hike

We start out on the outskirts of a small village in the majority-Manchu Malanyu area.

To begin with we’re on an easy track, following the old quarry road up a flat valley.

After about 20 minutes we start the climb up into the hills, a slow ascent until we get to the firebreak that follows the ridgeline.

We then follow the firebreak all the way up to one of the lower peaks in the hills here. From the clearing on the peak we should be able to spot some of the tombs down below.

From the peak we head down to a dip in the hills, and then hike out along a long valley to reach the tombs area.

The Eastern Qing tombs

The Eastern Qing Tombs are located in Hebei Province, to the northeast of Beijing and a little way outside of the Beijing municipality. As opposed to the well known Ming Tombs in Changping, the Eastern Qing Tombs are grouped quite closely together, making it easy to see a lot at the same time. The tombs are no less interesting than the Ming Tombs, and several of the tombs have their underground areas—called Underground Palaces—open to visits. In some places, the red walls and halls look a little like parts of the Forbidden City, were it to have a more open-plan layout.

In the Eastern Qing Tombs complex we can visit the tombs of numerous famous figures of the Qing Dynasty, including Shun Zhi (first emperor of the Qing Dynasty), Empress Dowager Cixi, and Qian Long (seventh and longest-reigning emperor of the Qing Dynasty). The site was chosen for its auspicious feng shui: mountains behind, and water in front.

Ramble about in the hills of Huailai, passing villages, valleys, and fields, with views of big mountains and Great Wall.

We’ll drive out past Badaling into Hebei Province to reach the trailhead, which begins on a lonely stretch of mountain highway. After a 30–40 minute walk up a road into the mountains, we’ll arrive at Big Camp Plate Village.

The ‘Camp’ part of the name comes from the village being an old supply point for the wall in this area, back in the Ming Dynasty. Nowadays the village is virtually empty, apart from when everyone shows up for the planting and harvest seasons.

From the village we continue along a dirt road, aiming for the meadows by the Great Wall.

his line of wall is fairly steep, and a lot of it has fallen down. This makes it a fairly tricky climb. But it’s worth it, with the views getting better and better the higher we get.

We’ll aim to get to the high point for lunch, and we’ll stop to enjoy the views as we eat – Great Wall on two sides, and mountains and valleys all around.

Nearby the high point is a line of Great Wall known as Yangbiancheng, which was built as a model for the construction of other Great Wall in the same area. We’ll hike down here after lunch for a look.

Add to your collection of Great Wall hikes with a visit to the Huangyaguan Great Wall, a repaired section that blocks a narrow pass in the mountains between Beijing and Tianjin. Post-hike meal and expensive tickets included in the cost.

We don’t often visit the Huangyaguan Great Wall because it’s so far away. But if you’ve already seen most of the Great Wall in Beijing, or would like to see a picturesque section that is not commonly visited as part of a trip to Beijing, it’s a good choice.

The Huangyaguan Great Wall is located in Tianjin, not too far over the Beijing-Tianjin border. It’s a repaired section that shows the Ming Dynasty style of Great Wall construction, with large towers connected by solid walls. You’ll also see some unique features – like an enormous round tower that isn’t connected to the main line of wall – as well as a fortress with a maze and a Great Wall museum.

We’ll first explore the fortress, taking a look at the museum and then finding our way through the maze and up on to the Great Wall.

On this visit we can go three towers up on the west side of the Great Wall here.

Hiking back down the wall from the west side, we’ll cross over the Water Gate – an arched bridge over the river – and then start the big climb to the top of the east side.

Steep steps on the wall take us up to the top section, where we’ll do a short out-and-back hike to the top tower on the north side before heading south along the Great Wall towards Taipingzhai, another fort attached to the wall here. On the way to Taipingzhai we’ll pass through a handful of large towers, and from up on the ridge here we’ll have long views all around.

Walk from Gubeikou to Jinshanling, following stretches of restored and unrestored Great Wall and taking a detour through the pretty farmland that surrounds Hemp Village, finishing all the way over at the eastern end of Jinshanling.

The hike begins at the Gubeikou section of the Great Wall in Miyun County, very close to the border of the Beijing and Hebei provinces. Even though it’s designated as a park, this section of the Great Wall is largely unrestored. It’s not often visited either, probably because it is so far away from central Beijing.

We’ll be following the Jinshanling Great Wall from west to east, starting off on the unrestored section before heading down into the main restored area. We’ll head straight through the restored area, and on towards the Simatai Great Wall.

Cost: ¥510 / ¥460 for members

The backwards version of our Chinese Knot hike—start by climbing up from Jiankou to ‘the Knot’, then down the back and over to the Great Wall Spur. Short but steep, with one tricky off-wall detour.

We start off in Xizhazi Village, a small settlement that is surrounded by a loop of wall.

We’ll hike hill trails up to the Great Wall on the southern side of the village. The trails start off reasonably mellow, but get steeper as we climb through forest.

When we hit the wall, up top on the ridge, we’ll turn right and head up to the ‘Chinese Knot’ area.

The Chinese Knot (also known as the Beijing Knot) is the point where Beijing's inner and outer lines of Great Wall join up—the inner wall coming from the Huanghuacheng direction and continuing past Mutianyu and out to the northeast, and the outer wall heading out towards Yanqing District and then farther into Hebei Province.

Just past the Knot, the wall gets really steep and really broken. We’ll hop off on to a side trail to go around that. The side trail is also tricky—a steep dirt path that’s interrupted by boulders and tree limbs, with some places that are just a little bit uncomfortable to stretch your legs over.

After a bit of scrambling down there, we’ll be back on to firmer footing, following the wall down to the Zhuanghu dip.

From the dip, we’ll follow the wall up and get on to our Great Wall Spur hiking trail, right at its highest point. We’ll follow a pretty stretch of unrestored wall through several towers, down a long line of wall that heads west.

This hike gives great views of Pingu District’s picturesque Jinhai Lake—first an overlook from the paved ridgeline trails of the hills beside the lake, followed by close-up views on from dirt tracks and trails right by the water.

There are some steep parts in the first half of the hike, with the higher ridgeline trails nearly 200m above the water. In the second half of the hike the trail is mostly flat, with one extended climb near the end.

We’ll take breaks as we go along, and we’ll stop for a lunch break at an open area right by the water.
