Celebrate Holi in Beijing With These Events

The Hindu Festival of Holi, sometimes called the Festival of Colors, is a celebration of the coming of spring. It is a sensory explosion with food, music, art and, of course, the iconic throwing of colored powder. According to history.com, this festival dates all the way back to the 4th century, and the throwing of the colors is a way to bond the community together, erasing the errors and broken relationships of the past and bringing in new blessings. “Red symbolizes love and fertility, yellow signifies prosperity and new beginnings, blue is associated with the divine Krishna and green embodies the rejuvenation of life and the onset of spring.”

As with all good parties, food is an important part of the celebration, too. In particular, sweet treats like gulab jamun and traditional drinks like thandai (also sometimes called rose lassi) are enjoyed to remind us of life's sweetness and to bring in abundance, and their bright color fits in perfectly with the festivities.

This year, Holi falls on Mar 14, and if you feel like getting into the Holi spirit, there are a few places across Beijing where you can celebrate it this weekend.
