Coke x Oreos and Volcano Pizza: August Fast Food Oddities

Perusing 7-11 and browsing on Meituan for a meal or drink can be like a treasure hunt – you never know what brand is going to be churning out what sort of food gem or abomination. This month, there are three such abominations, and they all contain Oreos.

The Oreo x Coca-Cola Collab

When we first laid eyes on the results of this team up, we had to ask “why?” It looks like a lot of people are asking the same question, as one WeChat commentary account put it: “Oreos and Coke are often enjoyed separately as a snack and drink, but why combine them?”

This is the question leveled at Coca-Cola’s Oreo flavored Coke (RMB 6.3 at 7-11), and Oreo’s Coke flavored Oreos (RMB 9 at 7-11). The former is Zero Sugar Coke with a cookie-flavored syrup (another common question asked by netizens: why do zero sugar if you’re adding cookie syrup?), while the latter is pretty much just normal Oreos with popping candy and cola flavor.

At the end of the day, both are just mid. Not bad, not good, but just kinda meh. The Oreo Coke is just cola all the way through with a slight hint of Oreo at the end, and the Coke Oreos are like that but just with cola flavor somewhere in there. While both products might not be all that great, one thing’s for sure: lots of people are trying them out of curiosity, so both companies can’t be losing too much from this one.

Domino’s Cheese Volcano and Oreo Pizza

We stumbled across this one on WeChat just yesterday, at first taken aback by the shape of the pizza before zeroing in on the fact that it also has an Oreo crumble for some reason.

Essentially a regular old pizza with a built in “cup” of cheese sauce for dipping, the “Volcano is Roaring” pizza looks kinda fun. All except the Oreo part, which makes us wonder if this is a more sweet than savory pizza. Either way, this is something we’d hesitantly try. Pies start at RMB 39-78 for 9 inch and RMB 68-107 for 12 inch.
