Try These New Pizzas in Beijing Today

When the moon hits your eye like some brand new pizza pie, that's amore!

Ok so bad attempts at making that Dean Martin song match up with the theme of this article aside, if you’ve been reading the Beijinger long enough, you know we really have a thing for burgers, spicy food, and pizza. While we’ve covered the former two a lot lately, we’ve been silent on the former, but that changes today!

The Annual Summer Duo at Pizza Saporita

Saporita usually does two new pizzas when summertime comes around, and this year is no exception. They’ve gone with a bit of local flavor for their first offering, the Elbow Meat Pizza (RMB 26/slice, RMB 118/whole, above), which comes topped with pickled cabbage and tender pork elbow, a traditional Beijing delicacy.

The other new pizza is the Kale Sausage (RMB 24/slice, RMB 108/whole, above) which has, you guessed it, kale and pork sausage sprinkled atop a bed of mozzarella and dough before heading into the oven to be cooked crisp. Give these a try today, or try their N'Duja Pizza (RMB 27/slice, RMB 118/round), which is still our favorite by far.

Porchetta on a Pie & Fried Calzone at La Pizza

La Pizza has slowly been making a comeback in the capital, with many of our Italian readers and friends singing its praises as one of the best pizza spots in the city. They’ve also been bringing a variety of Italian comfort foods to the menu, like regional pastas and porchetta – a pork roast consisting of stuffed pork shoulder wrapped in pork belly.

Earlier this year, they took the next step and combined two favorites together, marrying thinly porchetta with their Neapolitan style pizza for the Porchetta Pizza (RMB 108, above). Atop this pizza are layers of smoked cheese, mushrooms, potatoes, and the star of the show, thinly sliced, freshly roasted porchetta, for a real match made in Italian food lovers’ heaven.

More recently, La Pizza has also added Fried Calzone (RMB 99, above) to the menu as well. Inside this folded pizza there’s the classic two cheese combo of ricotta and mozzarella, with tomato for a bit of an acidic bite. It’s all wrapped up, fried, and topped with tomato sauce and cheese.

New Summer Pizzas at Bottega

Bottega has headed into summer with a new menu of five pizzas and a brand new calzone. While all look to be molto bene, we’ve got our eye on three: the Delizia, the Datterina, and the Calzone alla Mortadella.

The first two are classic Neapolitan pies with nice twists. The Delizia (RMB 129, above) is a no sauce cheese pizza topped with sausage, fried eggplant, fior di latte mozzarella, parmigiano reggiano, and fresh basil with grilled octopus, garlic, parsley, oregano, fresh basil, and lemon. The Datterina (RMB 99), is another cheese no sauce special, consisting of that mozz and parm combo, basil, and both yellow and red cherry tomatoes.

Then there’s the Calzone alla Mortadella (RMB 119, above), which combines your traditional calzone with the Mortazza pizza – pistachio, cheese, and mortadella. Essentially, it’s a calzone topped with mortadella, but this editor loves mortadella, so it makes it on the list.

Pechino Brings Neapolitan to Haidian

Haidian – way northwest Haidian, to be exact – now has Italian eats and wood-fired pizza in the form of Pechino. They’ve got a few 10 inch Neapolitan pies on the menu, all at pretty reasonable prices, ranging from the classic Margharita (RMB 69, above) to the Pechino (RMB 89), made with tomatoes, mozzarella, salami and assorted mushrooms.

Besides pizza, they’ve also got pasta, risotto, and even a few steak options to choose from – starting with an Australian Phoenix Wagyu Belly at RMB 188 for 230g.
