The Opposite House Closes After One Final Party

Sanlitun nightlife spot and boutique hotel The Opposite House hosted its final goodbye party this past Saturday, a day ahead of its closure on Jun 29. Scroll down to do a bit of I Spy and see if you can spot yourself or anyone you know in the slideshow here!

Now that the party is over, the building that formerly housed the hotel is closed to the public. When we visited there today (Jul 1), a peek inside found employees cleaning out the insides, with the property's cafes, bars, lobby, and other venues getting emptier by the minute.

While the reasons for its closure are still under wraps -- realistic inferences include Covid, high prices, and increasing rents -- what isn't a secret per the hotel's closure announcement a few months back is that the property is slated to be "converted into an innovated retail landmark."

As to when the construction crews will come to make changes, staff posted outside the hotel on the day of our visit told the Beijinger they'll be coming soon.

Whatever the plans may be, it's certainly sad to see The Opposite House go, even if every ending points to a new beginning, as signs outside the hotel suggest.
