Fast Food Watch: McDonald's Tries a Cheesier Cheeseburger
Cheese sauce on a burger isn’t anything new. A number of Beijing burger joints – Beersmith and Fat Tiger Burger immediately come to mind – have cheese sauce you can pour liberally on the patty or all over the burger itself. So what’s McDonald’s attempt like?
Short answer: It’s alright.
The American fast food chain just debuted what it’s dubbed the Triple Cheese Angus Thick Burger (三重之士安格斯厚牛堡 Sānchóng zhīshì āngésī hòu Niúbǎo). Part of the company's Angus MAX Burger series, the burger features four layers of cheese: yellow cheddar, two fried cheese sticks a "white cheese" sauce and an optional extra packet of cheese sauce to pour atop it.
They've even roped in Chinese Olympic sprinter Su Bingtian to do a very odd ad campaign for this new menu item. One minute we see Su sprinting down a track that morphs into musical notes, then he's decked out in a tux conducting music while... dreaming about this cheesy burger after a long day of both athletic and musical training?
Odd ad campaign aside, as with most Micky D’s burgers, there’s a definite issue with expectation vs. reality. Upon opening the box, I’m greeted by a lopsided burger. The two cheese sticks have fallen to one side, with the white cheese sauce pooled atop them, not covering the burger at all.
Be that as it may, when that yellow cheese sauce is dumped on the burger, it’s not all too bad, but next time we’ll want to experiment a bit more with how we use the sauce. In fact, the new sauce is available with any MAX burger order, so you can dump it over the Three Cheese, double bacon or other MAX options.
We’re not too sure if this is a time limited offer or if the Three Cheese and optional cheese sauces are joining the menu for good, so it’s best to head to your nearest McD’s or order waimai while it’s hot.
