Women Reign Supreme at Chili Pepper Eating Competition Round 2
A rabid crowd of supporters filled Encuentro on Sunday afternoon to witness history as two female contestants went pepper-to-pepper against a multinational field of 11 daring spice lovers to come out on top as Beijing's chili-eating co-champions.
Wenny from Indonesia and Jennifer from the USA bested a lineup of heavy-duty chili heads by making it into overtime, where they went at it with vim and vigor, ending up deadlocked in triple overtime.
Each contestant was subjected to nine rounds of increasingly spicy chilis. Rules dictated they could put nothing but peppers into their mouths during the competition. In front of them was placed a capsaicin-killing glass of Wild Africa Cream liqueur from sponsor KWV, as well as a cup of almond-based yogurt from Jooma.
Virtually the entire field made it through the first five rounds, but as the peppers rose in intensity, contestants began dropping like flies.
By the time the contest reached the final round of chilis – the deadly Habanero – we entered overtime with four standing – Wenny and Jennifer along with Jake from South Africa and Zhou from Hunan.
Sudden Death Overtime required each contestant to take a shot of hot sauce along with TWO Habaneros, and that was enough to put an end to both Jake and Zhou's pursuit of the crown.
Jennifer and Wenny continued on, and in triple overtime, BOTH consumed not only a shot of hot sauce but also THREE Habaneros... and thus, according to rules set out before the contest, they were both declared co-champions.
For their valor, the two won a package of prizes from sponsors KWV featuring KWV Brandy (aged 15 years), KWV Cape Ruby and Wild Africa Cream, as well as Beijnger spicy fest Blind Boxes filled with swag.
