Lone rider: Following an announcement that all rideshares ordered through apps like Didi Chuxing and Huaxiaozhu will require passengers to scan their Beijing Health Kit upon boarding, the city later decreed that carpooling will be temporarily banned on the platforms in order to reduce interaction between strangers within the vehicles. The cars will also once again be fitted with a protective plastic barrier between the front and back seats. Meanwhile, drivers for both platforms have already begun the process of vaccination

High fructose price syrup: Whereas the price of some fruits and vegetables in Beijing has shot up in recent days as regulations related to the latest COVID-19 outbreak slow the import of produce into the city and halt the movement of produce from Shunyi markets, other items are actually priced lower than ever thanks to a whole load of 'em being trucked into the capital. Cherry prices for instance, which are usually prohibitively expensive, have been slashed nearly in half. For the Mandarin proficient, the Beijinger Chinese edition has posted a write up on just how low cherry prices can go.

A whole lotta vax: On Monday of this week, the number of COVID-19 vaccinations in Beijing surpassed the one million mark. According to Xinhua News, the current pace of vaccinations in the capital stands at about 10,000-15,000 per day with 241 locations administering the shots. So far, there have been no serious side-effects reported.

Quack for sorry: The Beijing Shougang Ducks had to issue an apology this week after the team’s point guard Liu Xiaoyu got in a shouting match with referees over a foul issued in the last two seconds of a dead-heat game against the Shenzhen Aviators. The Ducks ended up losing the game, but that was the least of their troubles as the team faced major backlash in the media. The behavior was deemed unsportsmanlike by league officials.

Art on the shoulder: Beijing artist Song Dong was honored by Dior when the company selected his bag as the window display for the fifth annual Dior Lady Art event. The bag was inspired by old windows and features colorful mirrors made of resin that come together for a kaleidoscopic design.
