Beijingers Are Working Longer Hours - How Do You Stack Up?

Beijingers have reported that their work hours have yet again increased, according to a new survey released by the National Bureau of Statistics and reported by china.org.cn.

According to the report, Beijingers worked 8 hours and 34 minutes on average per day last year and even 7 hours and 42 minutes on weekends, an average increase of close to an hour per day compared to the previous decade. Young people (15 to 39 years old) spent the longest amount of time at work, clocking in 10 hours on average per day, while middle-aged people (40 to 64) spent 8 hours and 5 minutes, and seniors (65-plus) 5 hours 48 minutes.

The 4,238 respondents (2,063 males and 2,175 females) aged 15 and older, from 1,700 different households, said that their commuting time remaining unchanged from 2008, totaling around 1 hour and 29 minutes per day.

Additionally, the survey found that women worked 57 minutes less than men per day but spent on average 1 hour and 58 minutes on domestic tasks. In comparison, and perhaps the most surprising finding of all, men reportedly spent an average of 1 hour and 50 minutes on domestic tasks. As my mum would say, likely story!

Despite all that time cooking and cleaning, people still found an average of 3 hours and 6 minutes per day to surf the internet, though it's not clear whether this included time spent online during work.
