Being stuck on a Greek island isn’t as appealing as it sounds but alas, that’s my plight at this moment. Stuck in a gorgeous paradise I’m already missing the catcalls and grit of Athens already. What to do except get on my laptop and set up shop outside my room while the old caretaker goes about her day strangely wearing nylon stockings. So here ya go Beijing – enjoy your holidays!

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 28th

The Diders, Free Sex Shop, Anti-Shit, DJ DijieSan at School
Having not taken the stage in over a year, on this evening one of Beijing's wildest acts The Diders make their glorious return! Known for their out of control gigs and in your face insanity, The Diders are a shock to the system and seeing them in the flesh again is a delight. Is this a one-off show? Whom will the line-up be composed of? Will it be beautiful or a complete disaster? Only time will tell. Support from fellow punks Anti-Shit, female punk group Free Sex Shop, and DJ DijieSan. The show will also serve as the release for a limited edition comic book composed of contributions from artists and musicians in the Beijing underground arts scene. RMB 50

Chui Wan at Beijing Times Art Museum
Beijing’s premier psychedelic wranglers Chui Wan, who went through some lineup changes this past year, give a special performance at the Beijing Times Art Museum as they team up with Telestron, an exhibition where robotic conductors create a transformative experience through natural forces, using a geometric lighting environment to create a symbolic day and night cycle. Sounds like a groovy immersive illusory jam - music inspired by Eastern philosophy and pioneering technology installations from the West - the perfect excuse to head over to Wukesong. Noisemaker (JP), Twinkle Sat, Laisee at Mao Livehouse
Next-door, loud rock powerhouses Noisemaker from Hokkaido, Japan get down and crazy at Mao Livehouse. They’re been festival staples for well over a decade, a bombastic mix of alternative rock that melds together punk, hip-hop, R&B, garage rock, and new metal into something undeniably Japanese. Joining them will be Beijing’s own hardcore ruffians Laisee and emo rock favorites Twinkle Star. RMB 260

An evening of experimental compositions performed by an array of Beijing’s experimental scene – tonight’s special show will look at four compositions - Sinusoidal Computation, 62 63 64, Okra, Clouds – created by No Performance and Li Song – and the unique interpretations of them by various artists including Maeda Yasuyuki, Ding Chenchen, Ake, and more. Ogenix, SHAS, Electric Lady, Acid Coma at Temple
Some of metal gnarlier cousins make their way to Temple Bar including industrial metal racketeers Ogenix, sludge metal deviants SHAS aka Stinky Human Abuse to Subsist, stoner metal favorites Electric Lady, and sludgecore outfit Acid Coma. Dirty dirty fun. FREE

Zhen Ren at Caravan
For one night only, Zhen Ren, headed by ex-Beijinger Peter Murchison, returns. Playing early blues from before the Chicago blues scene, blues that originated from the rural American South, like Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, they combine country blues acoustic guitar and harmonica with modern electric guitar and electric slide guitar. Ice, PACT, Ma Jun, Young Jack, NaWuKeRe, Wang YiTai, Kungfu-Pen, JiaMeng at Tango
Hip-hop is only gaining more and more traction, particularly underground rap which is finding more and more ways to operate in the mainstream (for better or worse) whilst retaining their street cred. iQiYi’s ‘The Rap of China’ has been the main force because this rise and tonight so of the platform’s finest talent takes the stage - including authentic and ever handsome Ice from Chengdu, Xi’an rapper PACT (part of NOUS crew), Ma Jun from Xinjiang, Kungfu-Pen (of Sanding crew C-BLOCK) and more. South African singer-songwriter TYZ joins Rudi (of Tydi Knots) joins instrumental composer and performer String aka Xian, who combines 'world music, Chinese traditional melodies, and spiritual/religious themes. RMB 66

Jason Marsalis & The 21st Century Trad Band at Blue Note
Drummer Jason Marsalis, of the famous Marsalis jazz family, heads to Blue Note with his 21st Century Trad Band. The artist’s many recordings and accomplishments are too numerous to list, but he promises his audiences that he’s always learning and growing musically. RMB 160-360

James, Her And Her Walk, Sole at Soi Baochao
Folk tunes, flamenco stylings, and indie ramblings set course for Soi Baochao as James, joins duo Her And Her Walk, and singer-songwriter Sole. FREE

Simon Schirru Trio at The Bricks
Enjoy original Jazz tunes by the Italian guitarist Simone Schirru and his crew which features Daniel Callaghan on bass and Antonio Fusco on drums. FREE

Mad Rat, NeoRetro at Yue Space
Wuhan group Mad Rat who combine new wave, disco, synth pop, garage, and other styles into an explosive package look to shake things up this evening. Catch them at Yue Space alongside Chengdu outfit NeoRetro, known for their elements of funk, neo-soul, fusion, hip-hop and generally cheerful tunes that’ll have people dancing. RMB 100

ML Buch (Denmark), Oliver Møller Nehammer (Denmark), Hugejiletu at Danish Cultural Center
Danish Copenhagen-based musicians ML Buch, who creates elastic art pop combining both confident and sensitive vocal with a dusty beat, and producer, composer, and visual artist Oliver Møller Nehammer join Chinese musician (and original co-founder of Mongolian rock giants Hanggai) Hugejiletu in a Sino-Danish music exchange at the Danish Cultural Center. Come to School Bar this evening and witness some of the best up-and-coming rappers and hip-hop artists who have won different battles across China. Blue Note Beijing celebrates its 2nd anniversary with the next installment of its Master’s Series, this time featuring trumpeter and flugelhornist Ingrid Jensen. Originally from western Canada, and renowned for her burnished tone, melodic ingenuity, and stylistic versatility, she has been a leading soloist and international educator for three decades with a Juno Award to boot. She’ll join the Blue Note Beijing Jazz Orchestra as they present compositions of hers, as well as compositions by her sister Christine and past masters of the trumpet, including Kenny Wheeler, Thad Jones, and more. Marc Euvrie, a known figure in the French DIY punk and underground scene for years brings his newest project, The Eye of Time – an experimental noise project that combines traditional arrangements with electronica and other foreboding and menacing styles. Joining the musician is the Montreal based thisquietarmy, a fellow experimental noise musician who incorporates impromptu guitar and drone. RMB 80

Wasted Laika, The White Paper, Electric Lady, Pizza Face at School
School Bar starts the national week holiday with the 15th installment of one of our longest running gig series, ‘Bad Education!’ On the docket and set to lead this evening's debauchery from the front are rising art punk troupe Wasted Laika, indie rockers The White Paper, stoner prog-rockers Electric Lady, and female fronted punk newcomers, Pizza Face. A new venue is on the scene – FM Live – located south of Xitucheng and run by the same team behind Mogu Space and Pink Moon - opens with a folk-centric lineup featuring veteran folk-rocker Liu Donghong of the ‘cold rock’ band Sand, as well as Tibetan folk-rocker Dan Zengga, Xu Jun of the Qin style rock band Che Nian Po, long-haired northeastern Chinese singer-songwriter Wang Wu, and much more. Chiren at Mao Livehouse
Beijing-centric folk outfit Ciren, heavily influenced by Peking Opera and all things Beijing bring their hometown sound to Mao Livehouse as they release their new album.
