Being stuck on a Greek island isn’t as appealing as it sounds but alas, that’s my plight at this moment. Stuck in a gorgeous paradise I’m already missing the catcalls and grit of Athens already. What to do except get on my laptop and set up shop outside my room while the old caretaker goes about her day strangely wearing nylon stockings. So here ya go Beijing – enjoy your holidays!
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 28th
The Diders, Free Sex Shop, Anti-Shit, DJ DijieSan at School
Having not taken the stage in over a year, on this evening one of Beijing's wildest acts The Diders make their glorious return! Known for their out of control gigs and in your face insanity, The Diders are a shock to the system and seeing them in the flesh again is a delight. Is this a one-off show? Whom will the line-up be composed of? Will it be beautiful or a complete disaster? Only time will tell. Support from fellow punks Anti-Shit, female punk group Free Sex Shop, and DJ DijieSan. The show will also serve as the release for a limited edition comic book composed of contributions from artists and musicians in the Beijing underground arts scene. RMB 50
Chui Wan at Beijing Times Art Museum
Beijing’s premier psychedelic wranglers Chui Wan, who went through some lineup changes this past year, give a special performance at the Beijing Times Art Museum as they team up with Telestron, an exhibition where robotic conductors create a transformative experience through natural forces, using a geometric lighting environment to create a symbolic day and night cycle. Sounds like a groovy immersive illusory jam - music inspired by Eastern philosophy and pioneering technology installations from the West - the perfect excuse to head over to Wukesong. Noisemaker (JP), Twinkle Sat, Laisee at Mao Livehouse
Next-door, loud rock powerhouses Noisemaker from Hokkaido, Japan get down and crazy at Mao Livehouse. They’re been festival staples for well over a decade, a bombastic mix of alternative rock that melds together punk, hip-hop, R&B, garage rock, and new metal into something undeniably Japanese. Joining them will be Beijing’s own hardcore ruffians Laisee and emo rock favorites Twinkle Star. RMB 260

An evening of experimental compositions performed by an array of Beijing’s experimental scene – tonight’s special show will look at four compositions - Sinusoidal Computation, 62 63 64, Okra, Clouds – created by No Performance and Li Song – and the unique interpretations of them by various artists including Maeda Yasuyuki, Ding Chenchen, Ake, and more. Zhen Ren at Caravan
For one night only, Zhen Ren, headed by ex-Beijinger Peter Murchison, returns. Playing early blues from before the Chicago blues scene, blues that originated from the rural American South, like Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, they combine country blues acoustic guitar and harmonica with modern electric guitar and electric slide guitar. Hip-hop is only gaining more and more traction, particularly underground rap which is finding more and more ways to operate in the mainstream (for better or worse) whilst retaining their street cred. iQiYi’s ‘The Rap of China’ has been the main force because this rise and tonight so of the platform’s finest talent takes the stage - including authentic and ever handsome Ice from Chengdu, Xi’an rapper PACT (part of NOUS crew), Ma Jun from Xinjiang, Kungfu-Pen (of Sanding crew C-BLOCK) and more.
