Haute Design, Low Prices: Nome Comes to Beijing

When the rent is skyrocketing, and you can’t see a salary raise in your future, how do you make the impeccably designed home of your dreams become a reality? Enter Nome, AKA The Everything Store.

Nome, the home store that has signed about 150 independent Nordic designers (including Fredrik Moberg, Henrik Lundblad, and Axel Brechensbauer) have recently opened several outlets in Beijing, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. When it comes to furniture, accessories, and decoration, we love Zara Home, Muji, Habitat, Zaozuo, and Ikea, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find alternatives on the more affordable side.

So what are Nome all about? “No means its nonconformist brand concept, while Me reflects oneself and appeals to moving on and exploring another way of life,” according to their website.

You too, might lose your mind when shopping there, because the prices are so reasonable, the quality seems good, and the design is all minimalist-style. (Good luck trying to find the same items at the same price and the same quality on Taobao). Nome's selection features household items, such as bedding, chopsticks, cups, cutleries (from RMB 9.9), stools, chairs, pillows, tableware (RMB 6.9 and up), electronics (powder bank, phone cases), snacks (RMB 10 and up), make-up, clothing, shoes, accessories, luggage and bag, and stationery (RMB 10 and up).

The colors of the products are soothing and, well macaroon-like – lavender, bellamy rose, melon, tiffany, and baby blue. The soothing aesthetic extends to the entire store: shopping at Nome is similar to going to Ikea but without the huge crowds of people. The stationery section is superb with well-designed notebooks, pencils, rulers, clippers, and patterned tapes. If you have a yen for collecting stationeries, be wise, and take a friend who’s more rational than you to stop you from blowing all your hard-earned cash in one go.

Overall, we are glad that we can finally afford something we like; after all, good design shouldn't be rare, and everyone deserves to enjoy it for a decent price.
