Birthday hijinks, metal heads coming out in droves, and dream pop wonders from the coast of China – you know it’s still summer when the weekend roundup when the weekend roundup features so many wild cards. My recommendation – enjoy the madcap variety before the autumn brings out the big guns.

The Temple Quartet, Hang Nail, Hind Brain, Pizza Face at Temple
Ever wish you could turn Temple Bar into a classy ballroom for just one night. Well, here’s your chance. In honor of Temple manager Marshall’s birthday, Temple will hold their first-ever classical concert – as The Temple Quartet performs a variety of repertoires including hardcore and Struggle Session’s "Fuck You! This Is Hardcore!". Afterward, the evening turns into another headbanging affair with Hang Nail, Hind Brain, and Pizza Face – though everyone will still be in his or her finest suit. Gotta love it. ‘Eternal Summer’ returns just in time and the organizer, School Bar’s resident photographer Xiao Hou has wrangled up a scorcher of a lineup. Shanghai punk favorites Dirty Fingers return alongside punk all-star group Holy Shit, kinetic post-punk outfit The White Papers, and one of this year’s fine discoveries – the scrappy and abrasively fun Screaming Kong. Wangweima at DDC
Born in Inner Mongolia, the duo Wang Weima brings his dusty neofolk tunes to DDC to promote his forthcoming album, which will be released on MIDI Music. This will be the first stop of their nationwide tour, some swing by if you’re in the mood of acoustic melodies and slow-burning tunes. RMB 100
Ember Swift at Modernista
Known for her unique, jazz-influenced guitar playing and elastic vocals, the Canadian born Beijing based singer-songwriter Ember Swift has been a fixture of the Beijing music scene for years releasing an array of LPs and melding Mandarin, English, and French into one intoxicating package. FREE

Temple continues to celebrate the birthday of Temple manager’s mom with a rollicking affair featuring surf rock bosses Boss Cuts, power post-rock showstoppers Macondo, and post-punk renegades The White Papers. Zoogazer, Hotkey Killer, Last Goodbye at School Bar
Two of this year’s newest discoveries – Xuzhou’s Zoogazer and Xiamen’s Hotkey Killer (Rejian Bei ShaShou) bring their infectious brand of shoegaze-inflicted dream pop and noise pop to School Bar. Can’t recommend these cats enough – sun-drenched pop songs that reverberate not just with a heady amount of noise but a crackling sense of youthful energy. They are going to bands on everyone’s short list come next year. Support from Beijing’s own shoegazers Last Goodbye. RMB 100
Ling Tosite Sigure (JP) at Mao Livehouse
Japanese rock trio, formed in 2002 in Saitama Prefecture bring the noise to Wukeosng. The band's style resembles post-hardcore and progressive rock, often incorporating rapid changes of tempo and mood framed in complex guitar melodies and technical drumming. They utilize both male and female vocals ranging from soft singing to loud wails and screams. RMB 680
