Just like a zombie craving flesh, we recently made a bee line back to The Rug in Sanlitun to try their new and delicate pretty sweets. The first to fall victim to our hunger was the Rose Rose I Love U (RMB 45), a latte made from organic coffee beans, and served in a rose-flavored sea salt-rimmed glass, and decorated with pink rose petals. White Coat on Strawberry (RMB 45) is made from hot Valrhona white chocolate and milk. To emphasize the lovey-dovey aspect of this one, it comes inscribed with a big heart made from milk and white chocolate, the acidic strawberry balancing out the not-so-sweet chocolate, which helped make reduce the guilt of quickly sipping it down.
Red Diamond Mille Feuille (RMB 68) is made of layers of puff pastry with raspberry sorbet on top. A big spoonful of the hot pastry mixed with the cold sorbet tastes like some kind of heaven, especially with the texture from the blended raspberries, sliced sweetened apple, and rounded off with a sprinkle of cinnamon powder. With this type of dessert, who needs a boyfriend?
And finally, Strawberry Lovely (RMB 68) is a combination of fresh, homemade hotcakes cut out in a heart shape, decorated with strawberry and maple syrup. The soft, moist hotcakes when combined with a pinch of fine sugar powder and maple syrup make for the perfect breakfast.
All of these sweets tasted as good as they look, and deserve the abandonment your new year's resolutions. If you want to try out this new range with your special someone then head to The Rug on Valentine’s Day, for their RMB 399 per person set menu, which includes a choice of a starter, a soup, a salad, a main, and dessert and mulled wine; or RMB 888 per couple, with two appetizers, two soups, two salads, roasted crispy suckling pig and fresh grilled Boston lobster, two desserts, and two glasses of sparkling wine or rose wine, with mini coffee cones on the house.
