Six Excellent Exhibitions to Get Your Art On this Week
As always, our city is full of events and goings-on, but art exhibitions are easily overlooked if you think 798 is the be-all-end-all of art. There is some cool stuff, of course, but there are also exciting exhibitions going on in other parts of the metropolis right now, some of which are in their closing stages, so don't miss your chance to soak it all up!
Summer Silkscreen Prints Exhibition
Ever-art Club hosts the summer session of their silkscreen prints exhibitions. This time there are works by Yi Wu, Xiaowan Xia, Lang Sun, Ke Chen, Fei Wang, Yan Liu, Na Yang, Changjiang Zhang, and Muyu Wang.
Mon-Fri 9.30am-6pm until September 30. Ever-art Club.
Tbourida: The Fantasia of Morocco Photography Exhibition
Zarah is currently exhibiting John Horniblow's photography work in Morocco, focusing mostly on Tbourida. Tbourida, also known as 'the powder game,' is a traditional art form inspired by wartime attacks of the brave cavalrymen of Morocco. The traditional art form is practiced across rural Morocco to celebrate national and religious holidays, and are captured beautifully by Horniblow's photographs.
Sun-Thu 9am-midnight, Fri-Sat 9am-1am until August 28. Zarah
Through the Eyes of History: A Hard Journey to Peace
The National Art Museum's latest is hodge-podge of patriotic and propaganda pieces from the 1940s up until present day. The Japanese, as you might imagine, don't get much of a break in this "art exhibition to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese people's Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-Fascist War," as exemplified by the massive painting above, where a lone baby sits atop a mound of beheaded Chinese bodies, a Japanese soldier looking on and cleaning off his sword in approval. The second floor is a little more nuanced in its approach, housing Soviet propaganda from World War II, apparently as a sign of goodwill between Putin and Xi to educate and bring peace to their respective nations.
Remember to take ID. Daily 9am-5pm (last entry 4pm) until September 18. National Art Museum of China
Art and Nature: Rocks, Mountains, and Trees
Instituto Cervantes and Boers-Li Gallery are showing the work by renowned artists Qiu Anxiong, Yang Xinguang, and Richard Chiang to encourage dialogue about nature and people. The three artists' pieces display their personal impression of the Chinese landscape.
Daily 10am-7pm until September 20. Instituto Cervantes
Chemical City: Charlie Dutton
Up and coming British artist Charlie Dutton's work 'Chemical City' is currently on show at La Bas Bar. His fundamental ideas are taken from non-visual orientation, perception, and touching, with a touch of China. While in Beijing, Charlie has been developing new ideas with light sensitive materials such as cyanotype, chemigrams, and photograms.
Daily 7pm-midnight until August 30. La Bas Bar
William Kentridge: Notes Towards a Model Opera
The UCCA presents a comprehensive retrospective marking William Kentridge's largest exhibition in Asia to date. The show includes work from nearly every major project the artist has undertaken from 1988 to the present using a wide range of media including India ink, linocut, silkscreen on print paper, and charcoal.
